The Director of Collections is responsible for overseeing the Collection and Recovery strategy and efforts of Advance America. This includes all products and channels of the business portfolio. This position will have full responsibility for all internal Collections and outside 3rd party Collections suppliers and their results. Additionally, The Director of Collections will manage Debt sales and Debt buyers, ensuring regulatory compliance in the process. The Director of Collections will assist the Vice President in policy and procedural accountability for Collections and Recoveries. Furthermore, this position will work closely with corporate entities related to Collections and develop/foster positive relationships with all corporate and business operations leadership.
  • Extensive experience in leading an effective Collections/Recoveries team, ideally for small dollar, short-term lending
  • Strategic thinker to maximize collections, in all cases in a compliant manner
  • Ability to design models to determine queuing priority for outboard calling
  • Manage the total delinquency cycle ranging from past due collection calling, skip tracing, outside collection agency coordination, debt sales and litigation activity.
  • Exhibit strong supplier relationship skills to manage outside vendors
  • Experience with credit reporting to consumer bureaus
  • Perform independent validations of existing strategies to gauge effectiveness of criteria and of champion/challenger strategies where applicable, compare expected versus actual results, confirm proper implementation and accuracy/completeness of existing documentation
  • Business and results focused with ability to produce current results while investing for long term success
  • Strong relationships with external collections agencies to run effective champion/challenger programs
  • Develop exceptional relations with Internal customers and stakeholders; Effectively liaise with Zone, Regional, District and Online management regarding collection activities
  • Effective communicator to advise management around collection trends, effectiveness and strategy
  • Analyze root causes to ensure appropriate action plans can be developed to improve the entire sales through cash process, to reduce bad debt
  • Ensure the effectiveness of existing processes, and design and implement new processes, policies, and procedures to enable greater efficiency in the performance of the group's functions
  • Establish, administer, and maintain metrics to measure and track performance of the team; Measure performance against standards and drive continuous improvement
  • Design collection incentive plans to maximize success while minimizing risk of abuse/regulatory concerns
  • Specific experience building, validating and monitoring models, scores and other decision tools in a retail credit context is strongly preferred, as well as, analytical competencies
  • Familiarity with Collections tools, software and best practices
  • Other duties as required


Equivalent Education Level Required: Bachelor degree required, Masters preferred

Experience Required: Minimum of 10 years of previous management/executive level experience in a Collections & Recoveries environment. Candidate must be able to work in a collaborative environment and present themselves in a professional manner at all times. Must be comfortable is a "customer" or "stakeholder" model.

Knowledge Required: Professional verbal communication skills ; read, write, evaluate, and apply complex and detailed information; proficiently operate all business related computer programs required to complete job functions; ability to interact professionally with all organizational levels; exhibit exceptional negotiation skills; understand and ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and laws governing our industry/business and employees; an ability to maintain composure in stressful situations; ability to develop and maintain business relationships; knowledge of current Collections and Recoveries landscape.

Physical Requirements: Sitting; walking; bending; squatting; kneeling; pushing/pulling; reaching; twisting; frequent lifting of less than 10 lbs.; occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs.; typing; use of office equipment to include computers; other requirements expected in an office environment.

Travel: 10 - 30%

Attire: Business casual attire; Business professional when required.
