Food Stylist
The role of the food stylist is to make the food look attractive with appetite appeal in the finished photograph. The time and effort a stylist takes to carefully and artfully arrange the food, is the cause of differences between the way the stylist presents food, and the way a home cook or chef may present food. Visual know how is also a requirement, as is the knowledge of how to translate the perception of taste, aroma and appeal that one gets from an actual dish, to a two-dimensional photograph.
Food stylists have culinary training; some are professional chefs or have a background in home economics. In addition to knowledge of nutrition and cooking techniques, food stylists must also be resourceful shoppers. As creative professionals, they envision the finished photograph and style the food accordingly.
Responsibilities
  • Plans, prepares and styles food for product demonstration.
  • Interacts and educates other Stylists on food preparation tips.
  • Organizes and keeps kitchen clean and free of safety hazards.
  • Interacts with buyers regarding product list and determines what foods are needed to be presented.
  • Shops for food item to be demonstrated on-air.
  • Works closely with photo stylist to execute food production demonstration.
  • Inventories all kitchen items and ensures they are placed back in the proper room after use.
  • sourcing the ingredients, cooking them and ensuring that the prepared food stays ready to be photographedWork with styling team to prepare merchandise for daily photo shoots, which will involve having an eye (flare) for what makes food look appetizing and appealing
  • Collaborate with creative director to assign shooting schedule based on projects and staff availability.
  • Be knowledgeable about lighting, composition, editing and printing photographs.
  • If necessary, procure props for special projects in a resourceful and creative manner.
Qualifications
  • Degree from a Culinary School Prefered
  • Minimum 4 years of experience styling food in quick paced environment
  • Familiar working in a Studio Setting
  • Knowledge of all aspects of cooking (baking, frying, searing, etc...)
  • Be familiar with "tricks of the trade" that make food look good
  • Being very familliar with budgets
  • Have experience working with Photographers and other Stylists
