Welder Helper

As a general rule, employees start out at level one within their respective job position/classification. As new skills are acquired and requirements are satisfied, the employee can progress through the levels until they reach level three or are promoted/transferred to a different job position/classification. A team leader at any of the three levels will have additional responsibilities outlined below.

Helper – Level One
  1. Grind carbon and stainless steel couplings, SWS fittings and miscellaneous parts in preparation for coating or passivation.
  2. Operate the manual blast room equipment.
  3. Begin training on operation of MPM profiling machine for cutting and profiling fittings.
  4. Begin training on roll and cut grooving of pipe for fittings.


Helper – Level Two
  1. Perform all the duties required of a level one Helper.
  2. Fabricate restraint rings by operating the 4” diameter plate roll, the shaft roll and the hydraulic restraint ring cutter.
  3. Load, operate and unload the automatic blast machine.
  4. Able to operate MPM profiling machine without assistance.
  5. Able to perform all grooving operation and train others on cut and roll grooving of fittings.


Helper – Level Three

1. Perform all the duties required of a level two Helper.

2. Open the coupling bodies per specification prior to coating or passivation.

3. Learn how to straighten out rolled and welded couplings to insure that the bolt pads are parallel and square (prior to coating or passivation).

4. Begin training for tack-welding per AWS using the GMAW-P process.

Team Leader
  1. Verify availability of materials and supplies for in-process work orders.
  2. Ensure hourly employees assigned to work orders or indirect labor tasks stay on track to maintain proper work flow.
  3. Communicate resource requirements and issues to shift supervisor.
  4. Clarify work order requirements and provide guidance and/or training to hourly workers as required.
  5. Ensure required documentation is completed and is accurate.
