The Director of Benefits will strongly impact the Humana enterprise along with his/her team.
Reporting to the Enterprise Vice President of Associate Health & Well-being, the Director will be responsible for the overall design, implementation, communication and administration of Humana's benefits program. In this role, the ideal candidate will support our strategic objectives while bringing a strong focus on the quality and simplicity of the associate experience. Key Responsibilities
The Director must be skilled in influencing leaders in a large distributed organization, and effectively navigating through ambiguity and complexity. This individual will work collaboratively with internal stakeholders to innovate and pioneer new benefit offerings, sometimes leveraging and/or co-creating program resources and services sourced from within the companys product portfolio. As Director, you will be responsible for leading a team, deploying resources, and spearheading projects of strategic importance across the Humana enterprise, including:
  • Direct the development, implementation and administration of all enterprise wide benefits programs including employees' medical, dental, vision, short and long-term disability, employee assistance program, life and ad&d insurance, certain wellness programs, supplemental benefits, Family Medical & Leave, leaves of absences, retirement plans & 401(k), and multiple levels of benefits, including annual budgets for each plan program
  • Continually integrate and align benefit strategy, programs and plans with broader strategies for associate well-being and Human Resources while ensuring a simple, seamless associate experience
  • Develop benefit plans, policies and procedures to maintain compliance with regulatory statutes on federal, state and local levels
  • Design and oversee the annual enrollment process for health and welfare plans, including vendor/partner management, communications development and review, and system testing
  • Direct on-going studies for improving value and effectiveness of existing plans as related to market competitiveness and associate value
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other Humana areas on benefits and well-being communication; meet with all levels of associates, create and design benefit summaries, plan handbooks, plan descriptions, and all related employee communications
  • Interact with vendor/partner representatives to negotiate service contracts and fees and to resolve administrative issues, claims and billing problems. Interact with attorneys, auditors, actuaries, investment managers, to secure and direct the professional services required by various benefit programs. Direct Request for Proposal activities and the selection of new providers, as needed.
  • Collaborate with internal partners across the Humana enterprise to coordinate data transfer and ensure integrity, pioneer new external market offerings, resolve issues and develop process improvements to enhance associate experiences and understanding of benefits program
  • Lead and develop staff members to ensure understanding of benefits program strategy, participate in ongoing performance reviews, upgrade and develop talent, etc.
  • Spearhead the benefits integration for all acquisitions and divestitures to include analysis of benefit plan designs, recommendations, cost savings/impact, and employee communications
  • Participate in industry associations and respond to industry surveys and conduct benchmarking and market research as needed
Key first year deliverables that will be expected include, among others:
  • Leverage internal/external research to maximize value and impact of benefit design
  • Simplifying the associate benefit experience, including participation in new human capital management platform/system implementation
  • Spearheading initiatives to enhance the overall financial well-being of Humana associates

Key Qualifications

Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience in Benefits and:

  • Bachelor's Degree (required) in business, human resources, accounting or relations field; Master's degree highly preferred
  • Extensive and progressive experience in Health & Welfare and Defined Contribution program design and administration
  • Strong knowledge of Health Care Reform, other regulatory compliance requirements and contract terminology
  • Experience working with a Fortune 500, and/or large/complex/matrixed organization is ideal

  • A reputation for being a trusted business partner and a thought leader who leverages a strong grasp of the strategic direction of the business, and the challenges the enterprise faces
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to work collaboratively build, and maintain senior leader relationships
  • A high level of skill in analyzing, formatting and presenting benefit data, and concern for accuracy, passion for quality work, and timely delivery
  • Experience with M&A and integration of benefit systems strongly desired
  • Strong strategic planning and consultative skills
  • An entrepreneurial and innovative mentality to continue benefit evolution ; ability to co-create and test new solutions for potential external/commercial offerings
  • Experience with staff development and vendor management
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
