Job Description

The Assistive Technology Subject Matter Expert serves as the top level technical/functional expert on Assistive Technology across the program. He/Sheconducts accessibility compliance testing as well as trains designers, developers and engineers on using Assistive Technology standards. Other responsibilities include:

  • Ensures compliance and educates program team, designers, developers, engineers, Enterprise Service Desk and end-users on the application of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504, and Section 508 legal obligations and guidance.
  • Leads and supports general instructional design, development, and training as needed.
  • Conducts accessibility compliance testing and audits by conducting full reviews, analysis, and functional testing for new development/service/product and remediation, using various methodologies including automated testing tools, manual tests, and assistive technology usage for the Federal Agency.
  • Supports and trains designers, developers, engineers and the Enterprise Service Desk on using Assistive Technology standards and how to provide online accommodations with alternative media and technology.
  • Coordinates Assistive Technology implementation across the IT ecosystem
  • Provides expert advice and guidance to engineering teams as they test applications, websites, web services, and or electronic documents for accessibility
  • Ensures compliance with the Vocational Rehabilitation Act, Section 504 and Section 508 and the Americans with Disabilities Act as amended per 2008 requirements concerning disability issues.
  • Maintains accessibility reports as they relate to course and instructional materials.
  • Troubleshoots accessibility and assistive technology issues and recommends solutions.
  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of IT solutions/tools for overcoming accessibility barriers for web sites, software, and hardware
  • Develops and maintains accessibility review standards, guidelines and best practices.
  • Assists with general instructional design, development, and training.
  • Participates in special projects as required.

Education

(i) Masters Degree in Assistive Technology, Educational Technology, Systems Design or related field

(ii) Certification: Assistive Technology Certificate (i. e. CSUN ATACP or RESNA ATP) within the first year of employment

Qualifications

  • 15-20 years of experience inAssistive Technology, Educational Technology, Systems Design or related field
  • Significant experience in assessing accessibility compliance and creating strategies to meet legal requirements
  • Experience using tools to aid in accessibility evaluation.
  • Experience with ADA compliance issues relating to technology development and instructional design for online delivery.
  • Knowledge of mobile device accessibility/assistive technology for online delivery.
  • Knowledge of ADA policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the application of ADA/504/508 legal obligations/guidance and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2. 0 A-AA and 508 VPAT.
  • Ability to analyze course/instructional materials, and online media/software and provide support to developers, engineers and designers with respect to accessibility.
  • Thorough knowledge of accessibility testing techniques using automated and manual testing procedures including manually testing instructional content, media and software for accessibility using assistive technologies (screen reader, magnification and speech recognition/alternate input, voice input software, document accessibility testing tools, and others).
  • Awareness of disability related issues with respect to accessing information, communication, course/instructional materials and emerging technologies.
  • Knowledge of and experience with technical design methodology, theory, and application in relation to web-based design and development.
  • Knowledge of specialized software and designs to create accessible technology for users with disabilities.
