JOB RELATIONSHIP Reports to the Clinic Coordinator. QUALIFICATIONS Education: Masters degree in Speech-Language Hearing Pathology. Licensure: Current licensure for the practice of Speech/Language Pathology in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Certification: Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech and Hearing Association. BLS required. Experience: 3-4 years experience in evaluation and treatment of patients with neurological disorders/diseases, (i.e., VCA, multiple sclerosis, ALS). Experience should include clinical competence with aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria, R hemisphere cognitive communication disorders. 2 years experience with evaluation and treatment of patients with cognitive disorder secondary to traumatic brain injury. 2-3 years experience with evaluating and treating patients with dysphagia to include experience conducting videofluorscopic evaluation with Radiology Department and determine feeding and treatment recommendations. 3 years experience with patients with functional voice disorders, laryngectomy. 1 year experience with patients and fluency disorders. HOURS OF WORK As scheduled by Department Director to ensure appropriate coverage of department services. Must be able to work weekends as scheduled. Participates in on-call requirements as per department policy. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Exerting up to 35 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 17 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 7 pounds of force constantly to move objects. May involve frequent to constant standing, walking, pushing, pulling and manual dexterity. Other positional tasks may include frequent kneeling, crouching, stooping. Near vision correctable; far vision correctable; both eyes required; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); must be able to tolerate the following conditions: dry atmospheric conditions; excessive noise; intermittent dust; radiant energy; slippery or uneven walking surfaces; working around machinery with moving parts; working around moving objects or vehicles; working with hands in water; working with latex; working closely with others; working alone; protracted or irregular hours of work. Job Functions Evaluates inpatients and outpatients with speech, language, cognitive, oral motor, swallowing, and voice disorders; and outpatients with foreign accents. Diagnoses and develops goals for those patients and provides appropriate treatment. Adapts conventional Speech Therapy techniques to meet the age appropriate need of each patient along with other specific needs based on his/her mental, physical, and emotional status. Conducts videofluorscopic studies for patients with dysphagia with Radiologist. Determines deficits. Makes recommendations for feeding and treatment of exercises as needed. Recommends follow-up by Occupational Therapist and Dietician as needed. Educates nurses regarding results and strategies needed. Communicates results to Physicians. Reassesses patients status regularly to determine progress review goals and plan future goals with patient's participation. Provides education and counseling for patients regarding nature of deficits, recovery, compensatory strategies. Provides home program exercises. Documents/maintains records and charts. Maintains equipment and supplies used as part of therapeutic processes. Coordinates therapy schedules and goals with related therapies and support systems (i.e., OT, PT, Social Services). Attends patient care staffing, conferences, and other related meetings which pertain to the cognitive/communication skills of specific patients. Provides education and inservices to staff and public regarding topics in speech-language pathology. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field via reading literature and attending conferences/workshops. Participates in QA/QI.
