Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The registered pharmacist, counsels physicians, nurses and patients regarding drug therapy; performs or supervises the interpreting and filling of drug orders or the manufacturing and distribution of sterile and non-sterile drug items. Enforces state law and regulatory agency mandates regarding control of the medication environment. Provides support for and participates in patient management activities and other administrative processes as needed. Promotes safe, effective use of pharmacuetical products and provides consultative and other support on an as needed basis.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

* Previous hospital experience preferred.

* Residency training qualifies as hospital experience if in an acute care facility.

* Education as required by the Board of Pharmacy for licensure in the State of California.

* Must have experience and training in clinical pharmacy to be placed in a pharmacy rotation that includes clinical pharmacy assignments.

* Properties and effects of drug substances and chemicals.

* Compounding of prescriptions and pharmaceutical preparations. and supplies used in the setting of a hospital pharmacy.

* Legislation pertaining to dispensing and distribution of control drugs.

* Literature available and references used to answer inquiries and research clinical problems.

* Able to perform complex calculations, interpret complicated formulas and recognize inconsistencies and problem situations; always taking appropriate corrective action.

* Must have a good memory and respond well to department users.

* Presents a neat, clean, professional appearance; has a normally pitched pleasant voice and good communications skills.

* Demonstrated knowledge on handling methods for pharmaceutical materials.

* Familiar with medical terminology and interpretation of physician orders it applies to medications.

* Demonstrated ability for applying sterile technique to medication preparation, and supervising technician staff in these techniques.

* Use of pharmaceutical weighing, measuring and mixing devices and familiarity with units of measure used in medication preparations.

* Advise others regarding the properties and effects, proper administration, ability and compatibility of drug substances.

* Compound sterile and non-sterile drug items according to the highest quality standards. Work with patients in a hospital setting.

* Supervise and review the work of para-professional pharmacy personnel.

* Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a licensed pharmacist issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy.
