Position Summary:

Ensures food safety and quality of all products produced. Responsible for ensuring specifications are defined and communicated, formalizing process capability, institutionalizing process control and predictive quality process. Performs inspections of processes, employee training, compliance with applicable food laws and regulations and verifies plant HACCP plans. Defines best lab practices and provides guidance and adherence to quality policies. Actively participates in resolving customer complaints. Integral part of plant leadership team. Provides support to Sales, R&D and Operations on customer issues, questions and concerns.

Principal Duties:

  1. Lead SQF certification process as SQF practitioner. This position has the responsibility and authority to: oversee the development, implementation, review and maintenance of the SQF System (including food safety fundamentals and the food safety plan), take appropriate action to ensure the integrity of the SQF System, and communicate to relevant personnel all information essential to ensure the effective implementation and maintenance
  2. Ensure a high level of internal and external customer service. Investigate (and correct) customer issues and complaints relating to quality.
  3. Implement quality control management strategies, policies and testing procedures consistent with company goals and objectives in collaboration with the director of research & development and plant manager
  4. Develop and analyze statistical data and product specifications to determine standards and to establish quality and reliability expectancy of finished products.
  5. Manage the use of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) principles throughout the company's production facilities and co-pack network.
  6. Manage any product recalls and withdrawals.
  7. Responsible for the development and training programs for lab staff; develops training protocols, competency standards, and documentation requirements.
  8. Support new plant development projects by providing technical support.
  9. Manage and oversee all label and nutritional information.
  10. Facilitate multiple improvement teams in applying HACCP and SQF tools and techniques to achieve results.
  11. Support and maintain the implementation of SQF (Safe Quality Food) 2000 Level 2 certification.
  12. Manage all plant and co-packer certifications and audits: HACCP, EFSI Audits, Organic, Kosher, BPCS safety audits; Act as an SQF Practitioner.
  13. Coordinate objectives with production procedures in cooperation with Plant managers to maximize product reliability and minimize costs.
  14. Supervise workers engaged in inspection and testing activities to ensure high productivity and high technical integrity.
  15. Provide technical and statistical expertise to teams.
  16. Formulate, document and maintain quality control standards and on-going quality control objectives.
  17. Create, document and implement inspection criteria and procedures.
  18. Interpret quality control philosophy to key personnel within Company.
  19. Provide, and oversee, inspection activity for product throughout production cycle.
  20. Apply total quality management tools and approaches to analytical and reporting processes.
  21. Interact with vendors to ensure quality of all purchased parts (ingredients, tools, etc).
  22. Create and direct environmental test functions and applications.
  23. Maintain active role on internal Continuous Improvement teams.
  24. Design, develop and implement quality control training programs.
  25. Assist in data collection methodologies and quantification on financial impact of results.
  26. Transfer learning across teams and business.
  27. Report to work as scheduled; be on time from lunch, breaks, and at the beginning of the shift
  28. Follow GMP, SQF, and safety rules

Essential Physical Requirements:

  1. Able to sit and work at computer work station for 50% of the time
  2. Able to stand and walk for about 50% of the time
  3. Able to work in a high-paced and hot environment
  4. Able to withstand strong odors from the foods being processed

Education, Prior Work Experience/Specialized Skills and Knowledge

  1. BS/BA degree in science field required
  2. Minimum 7 years related experience required
  3. Minimum of 5 years experience in an analytical role
  4. Minimum of 5 years in supervisory/management experience
  5. Kaizen and Lean Manufacturing techniques
  6. Experience with developing/documenting procedures
  7. Use of Quality Engineering methods in inspection
  8. Quality orientation and high attention to detail
  9. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  10. Problem analysis and problem resolution skills
  11. Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse work group
  12. High level of computer literacy - proficient in developing spreadsheets (Excel preferred), Microsoft Outlook, and word processing. Current aptitude or ability/interest to master Access, PowerPoint, Minitab
