If the scents of baking bread, pies, doughnuts and other treats wafting through the air put a smile on your face, then a Bakery Team Leader position could be the perfect role for you. In this role, you will assist in overseeing the operations of a Bakery category and be given the opportunity to work with a team of employees, developing their skills and passions. You’ll use your love of food and passion for people to ensure the freshest, most delicious products are provided to our customers with the incredible service Wegmans prides itself on.

I will add value by:

  • Performing tasks essential to the proper functioning of the department including ordering with Simplification practices in mind, hiring & staffing, training & development, scheduling and managing payroll
  • Delegating tasks to team members and empowering them to take on new challenges, being certain to provide timely feedback and annual performance reviews that focus on their growth and professional development
  • Leading employees by example to provide incredible customer service, proactively approaching customers, educating them about products and answering any questions, helping them locate items and offer suggestions to complete their meals
  • Ensuring all tasks in the department are completed including rotating products for freshness, baking off products and completing all other production steps
  • Possessing an understanding of department trends and bakery products and using this knowledge to create production lists, being sure to oversee employees as they complete tasks to ensure items are produced with a consistent outcome that meets Wegmans standards of quality
  • Maintaining the overall appearance of the department, ensuring product levels are sustained throughout the day and displays are properly signed and well-merchandised consistent with company standards while reflecting seasonal trends and showcasing quality
  • Maintaining open lines of communication with team members and Bakery Manager to ensure smooth department operations
  • Educating and ensuring team members are properly handling products and equipment in accordance with food safety and safety guidelines

What abilities I must bring to the table to be considered:

  • Customer service experience, preferably in a bakery, food service, grocery or retail setting
  • Developing others by providing encouragement to folks to take on tasks that challenge them and align with their personal career goals while holding frequent development discussions using performance and career development tools to coach employees who need help and further development
  • Demonstrating an ability to manage others by working with employees to set and achieve goals, rewarding performance while exercising courage when providing honest, timely, and actionable feedback
  • Control inventory levels and expenses such as payroll and shrink to impact bottom-line contribution (profit) for the department
  • Work towards continuous improvement to encourage change; find ways to increase profitability and productivity; and improve processes, products & customer service in the department(s)
  • Use data analysis, wisdom, experience, judgment, and past actions as well as input from other sources for decision making, always considering the impact on customers, sales and contribution (profit)
  • Practice proper planning and staffing techniques which include managing time and resources
  • Maintain a safety focus by ensuring safety standards are followed, teaching safety practices to employees, looking for ways to improve safety, solving safety problems, and looking for ways to exceed safety standards and reduce risk potential
  • Practice proper ordering techniques to complete orders by deadlines and participate in inventory process to ensure items are available to support merchandising programs and product promotions
  • Exhibit merchandising skills by attractively displaying products considering seasonality, cross-merchandising opportunities and corporate programs with the aim of educating and enticing customers
  • Assist with meal preparation and planning by providing customers with proper serving guidelines and recommending correct cooking techniques, helping to make great meals easy

Work environment:

  • Work involves continuous interaction with customers and co-workers in a fast-paced environment
  • Typical motions include repetitive hand and arm movements, bending and reaching
  • Responsible for moving and lifting an average of 5 – 25 pounds with the maximum weight lifted of 35 pounds occasionally
  • May be exposed to various allergens
  • Will be required to spend the majority of time on his or her feet and stand or walk without a break for up to 4 hours
