Position Summary: Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN, has immediate openings for multiple full-time molecular-based Laboratory Genetic Counselors in support of hereditary cancer and medical oncology next generation sequencing tests.

Responsibilities: Genetic counselors play an integral role in the management and operations of our clinical genetic testing laboratories. The genetic counselors hired into these positions will work directly with small established teams of molecular-based counselors who comprise a dedicated and long-standing group of over 25 lab genetic counselors at Mayo Clinic. The selected candidates will also work closely with laboratory directors, medical geneticists, and laboratory personnel.

The genetic counselor in this role provides clinical expertise and patient advocacy in support of genetic testing performed within a given specialty area. Primary roles and responsibilities include patient case management, involvement in test utilization practices, primary liaison and communication to external health care providers, promotion of consistent test reporting standards, test design and development, and education to several rotating student groups (genetic counseling graduate students, medical residents, and fellows). An important role of the molecular-based genetic counselor involves evaluation, annotation, and classification of novel variants based on extensive review and collation of public and private data sources. This information is synthesized by the genetic counselor with provided clinical information to draft a comprehensive interpretive report in collaboration with the laboratory director. Therefore, the selected candidate should have a strong background in Human Genetics and molecular genetics. The candidate must also display excellent writing, communication, problem-solving and organizational skills. Prior experience with variant evaluation using online databases, in-silico variant analysis tools, and interpreting genetic testing results is preferred but not required (005324-41435).

The roles and responsibilities associated with this position may be performed on-site OR off-site as a telework employee dependent on the applicant's qualifications.

A two-year commitment to this position is required

Qualifications: Master of Science or Master of Arts in Genetic Counseling granted by a genetic counseling program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) required. Eligible for active candidate status as defined by ABGC or board certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) necessary. Certification must be attained within 2 years of start date. Professional knowledge of the rapidly changing principles and practice of medical, clinical, and laboratory genetics required. Must have effective oral and written presentation and communication skills, superior organizational skills and be able to work independently. Computer skills appropriate for laboratory and clinical case management necessary.

Additional Qualifications: For position offering Teleworking opportunity: In addition to the required education, ONE year of Mayo Clinic on-site training or ONE year previous laboratory genetic counselor experience (or equivalent) is required.

License or Certification: Eligible for active candidate status as defined by ABGC or board certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) necessary. Certification must be attained within 2 years of start date. Genetic counselors residing in the state of Minnesota or providing direct patient care to patients in the state of Minnestoa must be licensed by the state of Minnestoa

Compensation Detail: Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum salary every 2 weeks is approx $2,777.60, based on a full-time position.
