Job Summary:

Provides medical/clinical genetic services to individuals and families with a known or suspected inherited cancer condition. Ensures efficient patient services are provided. Provides information and counseling, coordinates genetic testing, evaluates and determines individual and families needs and makes appropriate referrals based on the evaluations.

Responsibilities:

* Conducts thorough medical histories, obtains detailed family histories, conducts group and individual counseling including risk assessment and diagnostic management.

* Initiates appropriate lab, x-ray tests or other special tests required for evaluation.

* Develops a working diagnosis with direct review by a physician.

* Explains and interprets results to patients. Coordinates handling of patient specimens with the appropriate laboratory.

* Collects and scrutinizes lab data and medical records to establish a record of the patient's current health status.

* Reports results of testing to patients and referring physicians.

* Constructs letters to referring physician regarding patient progress and treatment plans; ensures letters are reviewed and signed by the appropriate CCF physician.

* Functions as a liaison between physician, patient, and family to promote effective communication and maintain quality patient care.

* Provides information and surveillance recommendations and answers routine questions of patients regarding the genetic condition affecting them and/or family members under the direction of a physician.

* Educates patients regarding their disease and treatments in addition to any risks, benefits and limitations of genetic testing.

* Attends and participates in professional meetings, directed educational opportunities, and in-service programs to enhance genetic knowledge and learn of new or changing protocols and technologies.

* Provides classroom instruction in genetics to medical students, residents and graduate students from various disciplines.

* Other duties as assigned.

Education:

* Master's Degree (MS/MA/ScM/MSHyg) from an accredited training program in Genetic Counseling.

Certifications:

* Board Certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and/or the American College of Medical Genetics.

Complexity of Work:

* Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

* Must be able to work in a stressful environment.

Work Experience:

* Minimum of three years post-graduate clinical experience as a genetic counselor with demonstrated experience in a genetics clinic setting.

* Experience with genetic counseling billing codes and EPIC EMR system is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

* Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer and other basic office equipment.

* Requires frequent sitting and bending and occasional walking and standing.

* Ability to carry medical charts and books.

* Infrequent exposure to bodily fluids is possible.

Personal Protective Equipment:

* Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
