About this job

Assistant Professor in Scenic Design The Department of Performing Arts invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Scenic Design.  The appointment begins August 23, 2018. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through ongoing engagement with students both inside and outside of the classroom in addition to traditional creative work, teaching, and service. Emerson College is committed to an active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity—in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in the College's intellectual, social, cultural, and geographical communities. Emerson endorses a framework of inclusive excellence, which recognizes that institutional excellence comes from fully engaging with diversity in all aspects of institutional activities. Emerson is committed to strengthening communities, including our workplace, by fostering the development of the intercultural competencies necessary for meaningful citizenship in an increasingly complex, pluralistic society. The Department of Performing Arts is home to one of the nation's leading programs in theatrical performance, design, stage management, and theatre education. With a team of 90 full- and part-time faculty and theatre staff members, the department enrolls 550 students in nine distinct undergraduate programs and one graduate program. The department offers BFA degrees in Theatre, Theatre Education, Theatre Design Technology, Stage & Screen Design Technology, Stage & Production Management, Musical Theatre, Acting, Theatre & Performance, and Theatre Education & Performance; general education courses in theatre studies; and an MA degree in Theatre Education.  Emerson Stage, the production organization within the department, produces eight to ten fully staged major productions annually in five theatres, with additional production opportunities available to our students through curricular projects, student theatre organizations and ArtsEmerson, the College's professional presenting company. Emerson College is the nation's only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a liberal arts context.  It is located in Boston's Literary Cultural District in the dynamic multi-cultural city of Boston in close proximity to major publishing houses, arts institutions, and research centers.  The college enrolls 3,783 undergraduate students and 641 graduate students from 71 countries and all 50 states. Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have an MFA degree in scenic design, professional experience as a scenic designer, and experience teaching scenic design at the college level in a diverse college environment.  Membership in United Scenic Artists, Local 829 is preferred. Candidates must have demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds.  A strong commitment to undergraduate education beyond the classroom is essential. The successful candidate will teach a variety of scenic design and design-related courses from the beginning to the advanced level. The candidate should have the ability to teach both traditional design practices and innovative design skills in the context of current and future scenic design trends and technologies.  Our ideal candidate will have additional skills in automation design and use, understanding of projection design as it relates to scenic design, and designing for new and devised works.  The Performing Arts Department houses a new interdepartmental BFA in Design for Stage and Screen.  Familiarity with the special needs of scenic design for film and television would be an asset. In addition to teaching five courses a year, this position requires designing one show per year for Emerson Stage, mentoring and advising design students working on Emerson Stage productions, and participating in the college's system of shared governance. To Apply: Please submit a letter of application, current curriculum vita, and the names and contact information for three references to the online faculty employment web page at https://emerson.peopleadmin.com/postings/15296. Preference will be given to applications received by November 1, but the position remains open until filled.  The Chronicle of Higher Education.
