Assistant Professor in Scenic Design The Department of Performing Arts invites applications for a
tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Scenic Design.
The appointment begins August 23, 2018. The Department seeks
candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of
the academic community through ongoing engagement with students
both inside and outside of the classroom in addition to traditional
creative work, teaching, and service.

The Department of Performing Arts is home to one of the nation's
leading programs in theatrical performance, design, stage
management, and theatre education. With a team of 90 full- and
part-time faculty and theatre staff members, the department enrolls
550 students in nine distinct undergraduate programs and
one graduate program. The department offers BFA degrees
in Theatre, Theatre Education, Theatre Design Technology,
Stage & Screen Design Technology, Stage & Production
Management, Musical Theatre, Acting, Theatre & Performance, and
Theatre Education & Performance; general education courses in
theatre studies; and an MA degree in Theatre Education.
Emerson Stage, the production organization within the
department, produces eight to ten fully staged major productions
annually in five theatres, with additional production opportunities
available to our students through curricular projects, student
theatre organizations and ArtsEmerson, the College's professional
presenting company.
Emerson College is the nation's only four-year institution
dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a
liberal arts context. It is located in Boston's Literary
Cultural District in the dynamic multi-cultural city of Boston in
close proximity to major publishing houses, arts institutions, and
research centers. The college enrolls 3,783 undergraduate
students and 641 graduate students from 71 countries and all 50
states.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have an MFA degree in scenic design,
professional experience as a scenic designer, and experience
teaching scenic design at the college level in a diverse college
environment. Membership in United Scenic Artists, Local 829
is preferred. Candidates must have demonstrated ability to work
effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse
backgrounds. A strong commitment to undergraduate education
beyond the classroom is essential.
The successful candidate will teach a variety of scenic design
and design-related courses from the beginning to the advanced
level. The candidate should have the ability to teach both
traditional design practices and innovative design skills in the
context of current and future scenic design trends and
technologies. Our ideal candidate will have additional skills
in automation design and use, understanding of projection design as
it relates to scenic design, and designing for new and devised
works. The Performing Arts Department houses a new
interdepartmental BFA in Design for Stage and Screen.
Familiarity with the special needs of scenic design for film and
television would be an asset. In addition to teaching five courses
a year, this position requires designing one show per year for
Emerson Stage, mentoring and advising design students working on
Emerson Stage productions, and participating in the college's
system of shared governance.
