Airfield Rescue Firefighter- St Augustine

$18.50 hr. 8-24hpw

JOB SUMMARY

Primary job is to respond to aircraft fire and rescue incidents. As needed, responds to fire alarms, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, structural fires, and requests for service; protects life and property endangered by fire or other hazards; participates in fire prevention, client education, and training activities; assists in maintenance of fire station and equipment; does related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AT ENTRY

Additional qualifications may be specified and receive preference, depending upon the nature of the position.

Background Prerequisites
  • Must undergo and meet company standards for background and reference checks, controlled substance testing, and behavioral selection survey, in addition to any mandatory licensing requirements
  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must have valid driver’s license for the state of residence
  • Must have clean driving record per MVR (7 year printout may be required)
  • No felony convictions
  • No misdemeanor convictions within the last 7 years
  • Successfully pass NFPA 1582 firefighter medical exam conducted by a licensed physician
  • Successfully pass a firefighter physical agility test.
Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (Associate’s Degree in Fire Technology preferred)
  • Must be a fire academy graduate from a State certified or Department of Defense certified training facility meeting the NFPA 1001 Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications training guidelines and possess a Firefighter II certificate from a State Fire Marshal’s office or from the Department of Defense adopted by the state where fire services are performed.
  • Must possess ARFF certification meeting the requirements specified in NFPA 1003-Standard for Airport Firefighter Professional Qualifications.
  • Must possess a valid/current Basic Life Support CPR/AED card from American Heart Association
  • Must possess a valid/current EMT-B license or be eligible for licensing as an EMT-B in the State where fire services will be performed
  • Must possess a current Hazardous Materials First Responder at the Operations Level certificate in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120(q)
  • Must possess NIMS 200 certification
Competencies (as demonstrated through experience, training, and/or testing)
  • Ability to meet and continue to meet any applicable state, county and municipal licensing requirements for ARFF Firefighters including EMT-B certification.
  • Ability to meet and continue to meet requirements for specific skills, certification or authorizations specified for the assigned site/airport.
  • Ability to understand, through on-site training, a variety of fire and smoke detection devices, alarm panels, and controls.
  • Ability to identify type of aircraft and the hazards associated with that type of aircraft.
  • Knowledge of emergency first aid techniques and of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders.
  • Knowledge of and ability to learn Fire Department and Airport operations and procedures.
  • Ability to see, hear, speak, and write clearly in English in order to communicate with employees and clients. Hearing and comprehension must be at normal range levels.
  • Ability to read and interpret airport runway signs and markings.
  • Ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.
  • Ability to write routine correspondence, including logs and reports.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
  • Ability to be an effective team member.
  • Ability to maintain professional composure when dealing with unusual circumstances.
  • Possess and maintain a courteous telephone and radio manner.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Actively and effectively responds to and mitigate aircraft fires, crashes, and rescue incidents based on the latest techniques of air crash rescue guidelines recommended by the NFPA, FAA and aircraft manufacturers.Actively and effectively fights structural fires based on up-to-date knowledge of layouts, potential hazards, and fixed fire protection systems.
  2. Visually inspects all tarmacs, runways, and taxiways for foreign object debris (FOD’s) or any other hazards to aircraft and takes the necessary steps to remove hazards from these areas.
  3. Performs stand-by fire protection during flight test, engine test, fueling operations, or any other operations that creates a condition for ignition of a fire.
  4. Performs effective pre-fire planning by identifying any new or existing hazards which may require modification of the prevention/protection program or type of response to a fire.
  5. Conducts daily vehicle and equipment operational checks to ensure proper operation at times of need.
  6. Maintains assigned firefighting equipment ensuring proper operation and functionality in a proper manner.
  7. Conducts routine testing of all of the client’s fire protection systems including all valves, pumps, alarm panels, risers, post indicator valves, sectional valves, and inspector test valves, all in accordance to the customer’s requirements.
  8. Conducts periodic inspections of the client’s site to detect and correct all uniform fire code violations, uniform building code violations, uniform electrical code violations, and any general violation of the client’s policies established for the purpose of maintaining a safe and fire free work environment.
  9. Maintains awareness of work environment safety procedures and promptly reports unsafe practices and/or procedures, accidents, injuries, and/or violations to the supervisor.
  10. Protects evidence and/or incident scenes in the event of accidents, emergencies, or investigations; sets up barriers and signage; and provides direction or information to others.
  11. Prepares logs or reports as required for site; writes or types reports or enters information in a computer using standard grammar, inspects posted requirements and memos, and takes action as required.
  12. Observes and reports incidents or suspicious activity to client representatives, company management, life/safety personnel, or public safety authorities as appropriate for the circumstances and/or as required by the client.
  13. Responds to incidents of fire, medical emergency, bomb threat, flooding, water discharge, elevator emergency, hazardous materials, confined space rescues, inclement weather, and other incidents or conditions following procedures established for the site, by the client, and/or through training or certification.
  14. Extricates trapped victim(s) actively and effectively ensuring all possible care for their protection during removal.
  15. Administers emergency medical care including first aid and basic life support medical aid and preparing victim(s) for transport to medical facilities as required.
  16. Provides an atmosphere in which all client employees and visitors know that the client responds to and cares about their needs; provides a courteous, respectful and pleasant interaction with each client employee and visitor as perceived from their point of view; presents a good image of the client and its fire/safety program.
  17. Carries out specific tasks and duties of a similar nature and scope as required for the assigned site.
