REQUIREMENTS

This is a professional nursing position performed in a school setting serving the school age children. Confidentiality of all activities is required. This position consists of varied work responsibilities and skills requiring independent decision making, planning, and organizing. Certification in CPR and First Aid is required to be maintained. This position provides supervision, training and direction of LPNs, the Health Support Technician and Health Clinic Assistant in health room activities / management. Provides public health information and counseling to students, their families and the school community. Work is performed under the supervision of a Senior Community Health Nurse Coordinator for professional and administrative direction. The school Principal is the ultimate overseer of records and the children on the campus. An automobile is required.

Must have a current Florida Registered Nursing License.

At least 1 year of experience developing individual care plans. Worked in School Health previously preferred. At least 1 year of experience working in the pediatric /adolescent setting preferred. Working knowledge of vaccines for children per CDC and ACIP recommendations preferred.

School Health Services

Health Room Management

Provides nursing assessment for students with acute health concerns either as a Clinic Nurse based in a school or a Basic Nurse overseeing multiple schools. Provides training for LPN, Health Support Technicians, and Health Clinic Assistants in the proper administration of prescribed medications and prescribed medical procedures according to policy and protocol. Documents on approved forms. Monitors documented care by performing quality assurance audits. Teaches / provides comfort measures and first aid to students presenting with illness or injury. Assures health room services are provided in a professional manner with safety and privacy and the clinic is maintained in hygienic condition. Assists students to obtain appropriate providers for health concerns through referrals to medical and social agencies.

Health Screening

Provides mandated health screenings or re-screenings (vision, scoliosis, anthropometric measurements) and other screening activities as directed by the Comprehensive School Health Program Plan (dental and/or hypertension). Provides training in proper screening technique/performance to school personnel/volunteer providing initial health screenings.

Health Counseling

Provides individual counseling on issues, such as, nutrition, physical exercise, communicable diseases, minor illnesses, human sexuality, family planning, risk-taking behaviors, hygiene, growth and development, and distributes preventative health care information. Refers to medical and social agencies. Participates in health outreach programs such as immunizations and/or health fairs.

Record Management

Maintains and provides security of the Student Health Record under the direction of the principal. Maintains daily logs on health room services, provides documents (normal and abnormal), screening results, and outcomes of health screenings in Student Health Record. Files and retrieves health information. Keeps accurate records of services; provided for evaluating the overall effectiveness of the program. Compiles and completes reports as directed. Uses computer to look up student information, e-mail, enter work hours, etc.

Medical Billing

Bills for all RN services and submits bills for clinic visits weekly, and, medication and/or daily procedures monthly to Fiscal.

Health Education

Provides consultation and educational information to school personnel regarding health issues. Provides and/or assists with classroom health education programs as invited or arranged.

Training of Non-medical Personnel

Trains non-medical personnel, teachers, and classroom paraprofessionals to perform required medical procedures as ordered by a child's physician in accordance with Florida Statute and MCHD policies/protocols.

Professional Support

Acts as consultant in matters regarding the fulfillment of the local School Health Services Plan and, complies with Florida Statutes pertaining to School Health.

Invasive Medical Procedures

Performs invasive medical services that require special medical knowledge, nursing judgment, and nursing assessment (including but not limited to: sterile catheterization, nasogastric tube feeding, cleaning and maintenance of a tracheostomy, and deep suctioning of a tracheostomy. If not competent in these skills, will accept training to become competent.

In-service, Staff Training, and Development

Attends all required or assigned staff meetings, in-services, and/or training programs. Assists in orienting new personnel to the program.

Personal Health Services

Interviews and conducts preliminary history and examination on clinic patient (this may include blood pressure monitoring, urinalysis, venipuncture, hematocrit determination, and/or preparation of laboratory specimens for analysis. Administers immunizations, other medications, and treatments as ordered by a physician in accordance with operational policies. Records pertinent information on professional records.

Other Duties

Performs other professional nursing duties as assigned and/or works where assigned at times of disaster. Responsible for the maintenance and cleanliness of School Health vehicles. Performs on call for MCPS sponsored activities i.e. Field Trips, after care program, etc.
