Virginia International University is searching for an Assistant Chef who will oversee the operation of VIU’s brand new café and Line Cooks to help prepare ingredients and assemble dishes.  We will be holding walk-in interviews at our location from 9am until 6pm all week.  Stop by with your resume and ask for the Food Services Manager when you arrive.

What You Need:

  • Experience: Minimum of 1+ years of cooking experience in fast food, cafeteria, or restaurant industry required; experience leading the workflow of a kitchen for the Assistant Chef role.
  • Willingness to work mornings, evenings and weekends as required.
  • Culinary knowledge required.
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written.
  • Detail-oriented, strong organizational skills, and ability to learn quickly.
  • Conscious of safety, sanitation, and other regulations.
  • Must be courteous and customer service-focused.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with teams to accomplish goals.
  • Strong initiative and proactive and positive attitude.
  • Ability to work with a highly diverse staff, faculty, and student body.

What You’ll Do:

As a Line Cook

  • Prep ingredients like it’s your job – well, it is your job.
  • Be a multi-tasking expert. You will be preparing, washing, cutting, weighing, mixing, and measuring all at the same time.
  • Work with an awesome Back of House (BOH) team to ensure cleanliness of the dining area and other workstations.
  • Provide amazing customer service to our students and staff members.

As an Assistant Chef

  • Wear the hats of a baker/fryer, cake decorator, food clerk, and chef – we need a jack-of-all-trades.
  • Monitor and oversee back of house (BOH) processes, including production and delivery, customer care, and overall cleanliness.
  • Oversee a team of dedicated food service professions to ensure perfect customer service.
  • Train and lead your team on various cooking techniques.
  • Develop creative recipes, keeping in mind consumer taste, nutritional needs, and ease of preparation.

FYI: The Bistro is open from 7am-7pm (Mon-Sat). Full-time (Assistant Chef) will work 40+ hours. Part-time (Line Cook) schedule will be 20-25 hours, set weekly.
