The Center for Forensic Science Research and Education (CFSRE) ( www.forensicscienceeducation.org ) at the Fredric Rieders Family Foundation (FRFF) provides forensic science education programs, courses, and seminars at the high school, graduate and post-professional continuing education level. We operate a facility with state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation dedicated to the support of our educational and research mission. Available analytical equipment includes thermal cyclers and genetic analyzers, HPLC, GCMS, HS-GCMS, LCMSMS, LCTOF, and a range of microscopes and other laboratory equipment and instrumentation. FRFF receives support from NMS Labs, the nation's leading independent provider of professional laboratory testing services, specializing in clinical toxicology, forensic science, and other vitally important areas of esoteric testing and expert services, and offers opportunities for collaboration to Foundation staff.

The Foundation is seeking a regular, full-time, Research Scientist I (Tox Post-Doc) to join their staff.

SUMMARY

The Postdoctoral Fellow leads research projects and initiatives in bioanalytical methods based in forensic toxicology, biology or and chemistry using Serology, DNA Analysis, HPLC, LC/MS/MS, GC, GC/MS, LCQTOF and other techniques. In this position, the individual will participate in ongoing research projects, recommend and implement technical innovations to improve quality, efficiency, profitability and service. Provides oversight and management of other technical staff, graduate students, and project staff. Position involves independent bench work and instrumentation operation and repair, method troubleshooting, preparation of SOP’s, and teaching and training other laboratorians. These scientists participate in professional conferences, industry meetings, and scientific publications. Innovative mindset, problem solving abilities, and interaction with other scientific staff are crucial traits in these staff. Demonstrated success in completion of complex development projects.

Major Duties And Responsibilities
  • Proficiency with 3 or more of the following techniques as appropriate to the discipline: HPLC, GC, LC-MS/MS, LCTOF, LCQTOF, GC-MS, ICPMS (one must be LC-MS/MS or GC-MS), capillary electrophoresis, immunoassays, RNA/DNA extraction, PCR/ qPCR, Sequencing and other molecular methods; plus demonstrated expertise in at least one technique.
  • Demonstrates expertise in instrumental method development using modern instruments (including expertise in use of associated software) as well as sample preparation
  • Toxicology/Chemistry: Develops complex & challenging bioanalytical assays for the identification and quantitation of biologically active compounds and their transformation products in seized drugs or biological fluids & tissues employing LC-MS/MS, HPLC, GC, and GC/MS technologies
  • Biology: Develops novel approaches in sample preparation of analytical approach for the identification of biological fluid and stains, and innovative approaches to analysis, sample preparation, purification, or data interpretation in DNA analysis.
  • Participates in development and preparation of grant applications
  • Trains staff and students to understand and apply chemical and instrumental methods
  • Serves as internal consultant in troubleshooting and development issues throughout the organization
  • Documents and adheres to QA and QC methods, and prepares and prepares and maintains SOP’s
  • Maintains currency with relevant literature and current topics, and performs literature searches
  • Participates in providing continuing education
  • Publishes in the scientific literature and presents at scientific meetings
  • Recommends and implements new programs
  • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Possesses oral and written communication skills, and good computer skills (including use of word processors, spreadsheets and data analysis software).
  • Excellent technical writing skills
  • Meets regulatory compliance standards and has knowledge of and follows proper safety practices
  • Ability to effectively present technical information and respond to questions in an understandable manner.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex technical data, procedures, and instructions in verbal, written, mathematical or diagrammatical form.
  • Ability to define and resolve problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to write presentations and articles using original or innovative techniques or style
  • Ability to make effective speeches/presentations to management, public groups and/or scientific forums
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Ph.D in chemistry, toxicology, pharmacology, biology, molecular biology, genetics or related science
  • 3 years of experience in sample prep, relevant instrumentation, method development
  • Track record of peer reviewed publication(s) and presentation at scientific meeting(s)
