Job summary

This position reports directly to the General Manager, and is fully responsible for ensuring the produce department provides the highest quality product and delivers the highest level of service to our customers. The Produce Manager is responsible for quality control, merchandising, maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the produce department, inventory management, addressing employee relations issues, monitoring labor costs, and hiring. The Produce Manager is also responsible for working closely with the Produce Buyer &; Produce Coordinator , to ensure the success of the store and department through excellent customer service and a demonstrated passion for food.

Summary of essential job functions
  • Ensure proper customer service and satisfaction by immediately greeting all customers, and work to develop
    relationships with customers.
  • Supervise all activities in the produce department including product quality, quantity, placement, rotation, signage, and displays.
  • Ensure Produce Department is cleaned and culled by 9:00 am, Monday through Sunday, even if the display is not full and waiting for produce.
  • Responsible for the department appearance, cleanliness, and adherence to both government and company ordinances.
  • Supervise, recruit, train, coach, mentor, and motivate department team members, and encourage them to take positive action and accountability for their work.
  • Develop and maintain the department schedule, and as the Produce Manager, you will close the store at least twice per week.
  • Produce Managers presence on the Produce floor is crucial, and is required to be on the floor communicating with customers and taking care of Produce displays about 6 hours out of 8-9 per day.
  • Responsible for training department team members of the safety operating procedures.
  • Ensure team members receive safety operating training procedures and comprehend how to preform proper inspections to meet HACCP regulations.
  • Conduct quarterly HACCP inspections and share results with the Produce Coordinator.
  • Review inventory for product rotation on a daily basis to prevent shrinkage and damages.
  • Accurately complete transfer log and shrink log forms on a daily basis, and forward to the accounting department by the end of business Monday for the previous week, while maintaining a copy of the completed forms in a filing system.
  • Ensure shelf pricing is correct and reflects the most recent pricing in Produce Order Guide provided by the Produce Coordinator.
  • Oversee the receiving of produce and check/match invoice for correct produce, quantity, and quality, at the time of receiving.
  • Communicate immediately to representative of the vendor company if the delivered produce is sub-par quality, wrong produce, incorrect count, or for any other discrepancies at the time of the delivery while the delivery truck is still at Tony’s property.
  • Ensure that the proper paperwork such as invoice, is completed and filed to Accounting department on the same day or the very latest the next morning.
  • Ensure products are appropriately stored in timely manner, i.e., no product should stay unpacked on the floor &; products needing refrigeration should go into cooler right away.
  • Products to be numbered according to the date received, i.e., if you received the product on March 28 th , please mark as 3/28 along with your Initials.
  • Maintain accurate computer inventory levels by having physical inventories performed on a regular basis and adjustments made.
  • Maintain refrigerated equipment and make sure maintenance contracts and schedules are followed.
  • Supervise the ordering of produce from vendors specified on Produce Order Guide on a regular basis to assure we have fresh and quality produce.
  • Ensure minimal shrink due to spoilage and not have too much inventory on hand.
  • Ensure that excess inventory not slotted on floor is stacked in overhead racks in close proximity to where it is sold or stored in freezers/refrigerators.
  • Communicate low stock/out of stock information with the Produce Coordinator after carefully checking the Produce department and the refrigerated storage for product.
  • Maintain all signage is correct and that flyers prices are reflected on the product.
  • Coordinate proper merchandising of aisles and creatively merchandise and set up impulse areas for merchandising.
  • Maintain communication and follow specific instructions and general guidance from the Produce Coordinator and General Manager.
  • Assist in other duties as needed and directed.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required

High School Diploma or GED

Technical training in Produce and Food Preparation

3 years Produce experience

Proficient computer skills to include Word and Excel

Proficient with Profit and Loss Statements

Ability to comprehend simple instructions

Effectively communicate the English language verbally and in writing

Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
Ability to multitask, prioritize, and demonstrate strong organizational skills
