Job DescriptionThe Patient Account Representative is responsible for working with payers, patients, and clients to resolve issues and facilitate prompt payment of claims. Thorough knowledge and understanding of medical billing, claims submission, and payer specific requirements is a must. Payers include but are not limited to Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross, and commercial health insurance carriers. Patient Account Representative must be a critical thinker and on the alert for information that is erroneous or inconsistent. Ability to research, clearly document and follow through to resolve claims issues. Scope of ResponsibilityPerforms various collection actions to expedite claim resolution at all levels of the claim process.Follow up on accounts with outstanding balances. (i.e. non-payments, over payments, under payments)Validates and processes adjustments.Handles rejections, denials, files appeals, re-files, patient billing requests.Contacts patients, carriers and/or physicians by phone and/or writing to obtain information.Reviews patient statements for release.Clearly documents accounts. (i.e. plan of action, follow up detail, and resolution)Maintains up to date knowledge of both paper and electronic submission to various carriers.Responds to inquiries concerning account balances, third party payments, etc., in a timely manner.Processes doctor, patient and/or insurance changes as needed.Provides and processes Financial Assistance Applications as needed.Appropriately handles all correspondence.Interprets and complies with state/ federal regulations, law and guidelines. Stays current with statutes and regulation that affect collections.Identify and report all insurance company trends. (i.e. denial patterns, payment patterns)Meet monthly and quarterly goals for collections.Participates in team meetings by sharing the details of cases worked.Other duties as assigned.Essential SkillsComprehensive knowledge of insurance plans, member eligibility, medical billing, insurance cards, and rules for identifying primary, secondary, supplemental, and replacement coverage.Ability to read and interpret an EOB/ Remittance Advice.Experience with CPT, ICD Coding, HCFA, and 837 terminologies.Comprehensive understanding and compliance with all applicable Federal, Multi-State, and Local laws and regulations. (i.e. Medicare and Medicaid, claim filing and collection rules.)Understanding of legal and ethical issues concerning patient confidentiality. Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality (HIPAA).Consistently shows ability to recognize and deal with priorities.Consistently acts as a customer service representative for the company.Ability to provide feedback and make recommendations to improve processes.Performs all duties in an independent manner with minimal direction and supervision.Strong problem solving skills.Accurate and precise math skills, ability to calculate figures and amounts.Excellent verbal and communication skills. English grammar and punctuation skills.Computer proficiency (Advanced Microsoft Office Skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, Gmail)Promotes a high degree of morale and spirit of motivation within the office. This includes the degree of cooperation, communication and coordination between this function and other employees.Requirements2-4 years- experience in a medical billing environment with a proven track record of success in billing, collection, reimbursement and follow up.Billing and Coding experience requiredHave earned an academic high school diploma or equivalent.Bilingual (Spanish) a plus.
