The First Assist under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, provides set-up and preparation of surgical procedures for physicians and surgical staff, provides support and communicates directly with surgical teams and supervisory staff, and assists in OR efficiency by prepping/closing skin and advanced surgical tech expertise.

Job Description Details:

Skills, Knowledge, Education, and Experience:

* High school diploma or equivalent required.

* Graduate of LPN or Surgical Technologist Program required.

* Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) required.

* Completion of a First Assist program accredited by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Certified as a First Assist.

* American Heart Association Basic Life Support for HealthCare Provider (BLS/HCP) certification required.

* Two years of scrub experience in acute care hospital setting preferred and demonstrated expertise in at least one major surgical service-line with proficiency in a second major service line.

Essential Functions:

* Meets Health System's Guiding Behaviors and Caring Standards including interpersonal communication and professional conduct expectations.

* Demonstrates knowledge and skills to competently care for all assigned age groups (Neonate, Child, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric as applicable).

* Demonstrates compliance with hospital safety policies and procedures.

* Demonstrates knowledge of cautery safety (grounding pad and cautery use during procedure).

* Recognizes breaks in aseptic technique and takes immediate corrective action.

* Demonstrates equipment checks to assure proper functioning.

* Updates and reviews surgeon preference cards.

* Able to gown and glove other members of the perioperative 'sterile' team.

* Able to gown and glove self through use of closed and open method.

* Assists in draping the patient, opening, tying knots, and closing at the discretion of a surgeon.

* Closes skin, subcutaneous tissue and fascia under the supervision of a surgeon who will remain in the Perioperative areas and able to return to the operating room immediately.

* Applies routine dressings as requested by surgeon.

* Anticipates and prioritizes surgeon needs. Communicates with RN Circulator to obtain needed resources. LPNs may function under the Nurse Practice Action with RN supervision.

* Responsible for technical equipment and supplies (e.g., inventory, usage, organization, maintenance in own specialty area).

* Troubleshoots equipment within own specialty to bring to resolution.

* Independently manages instrument, sponge and sharp counts for all procedures in specialty areas and all procedures assigned outside of specialty.

* Provides educational in-services to OR staff as requested.

* Completes 20 hours or more of Continued Education Units (CEUs) per year.

* Assists and/or follows direction of the RN Circulator to set up a room and obtain equipment, etc.
