The Entry Ski and Snowboard School Instructor is a novice ski instructor, typically with little or no previous experience. At this level, instructors are actively engaged in attaining teaching skills and learning the responsibilities of a fully competent instructor.  The Entry Instructor is proficient in skiing and/or riding in a variety of terrains.  This instructor is building strong guest relations and utilizes communication skills to facilitate learning and repeat visits. Working under the guidance of more experienced instructors, this instructor typically instructs entry level skiers and snowboarders and teaches less difficult/challenging classes or individuals. 

 

As a benefit, employees of Mt. Brighton are eligible for the EPIC Season Pass which is valid at all the Vail Resorts in the United States and Canada.   This pass is also available for employee dependents at a minimal cost.    Opportunities for advancement abound, including the chance to Extend Your Winter by working at western Vail Resort in the Spring.    

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate, and continually develop, an understanding of skiing and/or riding concepts.
  • Clearly and accurately instruct skiing or snowboarding to students in a fun and safe manner using various training techniques adapted to the students’ needs; utilize available resources to maintain the quality of teaching standards.
  • Uphold the highest levels of guest safety in varying winter weather conditions.
  • Communicate and assists guests of all abilities with transportation of equipment, getting to their feet, and loading/unloading the lifts.
  • When working with children, supervise children at all times ensuring return of child to identified guardian.
  • Perform daily tasks and lessons scheduled to your work area each shift according to Instructor Scheduling Report, or other tool as assigned by Ski School Manager.
  • Ensure that guests are matched to appropriate skier/snowboarding skill level by working with Ski and Snowboard Team Leads to make appropriate lessons changes when necessary.
  • Model and demonstrate knowledge about our resort and department product lines, company policies and procedures, dress code and work schedules.
  • Assist in operational responsibilities of Ski & Snowboard programs including but not limited to registration process, directing guests to appropriate equipment fitting source, upkeep of outdoor teaching areas and cleanliness of facilities.
  • Be proactive to provide superior guest service at all times (internal and external)  
  • Understand, lead and model safety standards within the department for yourself and others; contribute to our culture of Health and Safety to meet Zero Workman’s Comp safety goal.
  • Communicate effectively with leadership, peers and other departments to create an environment of support and trust that will benefit staff and guests.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Desire to work with and relate to adults, children, parents, and employees
  • Excellent communication and guest service skills
  • Ability to perform in a high paced, variable, multi-faceted environment with the ability to multi-task and work on a team
  • Previous experience in teaching/coaching/mentoring (children if applicable)
  • Familiar with proper techniques regarding the lifting and handling of children
  • Able to withstand lengthy exposure to cold and inclement weather
  • High School or equivalent – Preferred
  • Physical strength and ability to: respond appropriately to emergency and other unplanned situations; stand for long periods of time; kneel, stoop, bend frequently; lift 50 lbs.
