JOB DESCRIPTION: Provides timely and accurate documentation for all interpretative sessions and keeps updated information in the system for monthly reports and statistical data. Provides information to EHC staff and patients concerning accessing interpretation services. During down times will work on document translation under the supervision of the translator. Provides medical interpretation, sight translation and document translation on down times. Reports directly to the Supervisor of Interpretation and Translation Services. Interpreter assists LEP patients and EHC staff by providing language interpretation in person or over the phone or the internet (when available). Ensures effective communication with patients, families and staff. Demonstrates knowledge and practice of the interpreter roles and understands the cultural differences. Follows the National Code of Ethics from the NCIHC for medical interpreters. Demonstrates competent and sensitive conduct in cross-cultural situations. Works as a language and a cultural broker for LEP patients. Provides the highest level of customer service to patients of the EHC system. Advocates on behalf of the patients as necessary to protect and promote patients rights. Makes rounds to ensure LEP patients receive adequate language services. Provides information to EHC staff and patients concerning accessing interpretation services. Acquires knowledge and abides by policies and procedures of EHC and the Interpretation and Translation Service.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree preferred. Must be fluent in English and Korean (able to speak, read, and write in both languages, with emphasis and expertise in medical terminology). Medical interpretation certification from Bridging the Gap or similar institution preferred. One year experience as medical interpreter. Broad knowledge of medical terminology and culture. Microsoft Office knowledge a must.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
