Overview

The Laboratory Assistant I is responsible for the operation, organization of the Central Collection department and for carrying out the philosophy and objectives established by the Board of Directors and the Management Team. Foremost among these responsibilities are strictly adhering to detail in the performance of laboratory procedures, solving practical problems, resolving conflict, and implementing constructive change.

Responsibilities

* The associate is aware of hospital and department compliance for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of department or hospital administrative staff.

* Purposefully conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the hospital's commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.

* Successfully completes hospital-wide orientation, annual hospital competencies and department/unit specific competencies.

* For the safety of our patients and co-workers, St. Luke's Hospital requires seasonal and job related vaccinations. This is reviewed regularly during periodic health assessments

* Adheres to all required department policies relating to dress code, attendance and confidentiality.

* Has appropriate training and performs venous and capillary blood collection, processing and delivery of specimens to departments within St. Luke's Laboratory.

* Consistently demonstrates attention to detail in following protocol for patient, sample, and aliquot identification and labeling.

* Is able to prioritize work appropriately and assists others as time and workload permit.

* Completes usual and special assignments with a minimum of supervision and guidance.

* Complies with methodologies, procedures and services in consultation with the assigned manager/supervisor.

* Performs work within specified turnaround time for assigned area.

* Assists in interpreting provider orders and ensures the correct tests are ordered in the computer system.

* Assists with training new employees, students and others as assigned; being helpful and supportive in the careful teaching of the new associates.

* Assures that QA guidelines are strictly followed. Is responsible for executing and monitoring technical practices of the department in order to meet necessary standards, recommendations and requirements of voluntary and government agencies (ie. CAP, JCAHO).

* Demonstrates knowledge of computer programs used for order entry, specimen collection, & patient inquiry.

* Works with manager/supervisor to assure that services are consistent with the needs of the medical staff.

* Attends inservices, on the job training, and continuing education programs to meet developmental needs and keep abreast of new technologies.

* Communicates problems or concerns to manager/supervisor and documents as necessary.

* Assures adequate supplies are available and utilized in a cost effective manner.

* Understands and adheres to all safety practices while performing duties to minimize any risk of injury and/or exposure to biohazardous material.

* Assists with development, preparation, implementation and attainment of organization policies and goals.

* Communicates effectively inter- and intra-departmentally with other healthcare professionals and customers to provide accurate, timely information and to reduce problems and minimize exceptions.

* Greets all customers, including patients, donors, physicians and other hospital personnel, with a pleasant and professional manner and appearance.

* Possesses ability and makes good independent decisions based upon knowledge of the overall departmental functions, policies, and procedures.

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

* High School Graduate or equivalent

Qualifications/Experience

* Must possess excellent communication skills. Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

* Experience with phlebotomy is desirable.

* A lab assistant I may apply for consideration to be moved to lab assistant II when all requirements are met.
