Afton Alps operates a large and successful alpine racing program that ranges from weekend recreational development teams for kids and teens to more intensive USSA and FIS racing. We also offer adult race training. We are looking for qualified coaches so that we can continue to deliver exceptional training and racing experiences to our participants. To be a successful coach, you must have a strong background in racing and be able to demonstrate and teach current free skiing and racing technique in courses. The Instructor/Coach will provide quality ski race instruction to groups and individuals in a safe and fun manner while upholding all skier safety rules/regulations and Company guidelines.

 

Successful candidates will be assigned to race programs that match their coaching and racing experience. All race coaches are part of Afton Alps Ski and Snowboard School and may be expected to occasionally coach or instruct in areas or programs other than their primary assignment.  Prior to the start of the season, Afton Alps provides training to prospective instructors and coaches. Throughout the season, Afton Alps provides training opportunities, clinics and support for coaches and instructors to seek PSIA or USSA certification.

 

The Alpine Race Coach position is a part-time seasonal role.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Uphold the highest levels of guest safety on varied terrain with varying winter weather conditions.
  • Clearly and accurately instruct assigned levels of skiing or snowboarding to students.
  • Deliver an exceptional guest experience at all times maintaining the highest level of professionalism.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and be willing to work in a variety of areas/programs within the Ski and Snowboard School as required by the business’ needs. Be willing to instruct all ages and abilities within your capabilities and training.
  • Ensure that students are matched to appropriate skill level and working with supervisors/managers to make appropriate changes when necessary.
  • Leading racers of varying levels in training and competitive environments.
  • Communicating instructions and helping guests to their feet during a lesson; lifting children by the vest (if applicable).
  • Supervising children in class at all times; assisting at lunch and snack times if requested; ensuring return of children to identified guardian.
  • Assisting in operational responsibilities of Ski & Snowboard programs including but not limited to registration process, directing guests to appropriate equipment fitting source, upkeep of outdoor teaching areas, and cleanliness of facilities.
  • Assist guests as required such that they receive an exceptional experience. This could include helping guests to load, ride and unload lifts; lifting guests to their feet during a lesson or lifting children by the vest; carry, put on or take off equipment or answer questions about facilities and services.
  • Ski safely and in control at all times while on duty.
  • Be attentive to the needs of the guests and respond quickly and effectively to requests from Supervisors and Coordinators.
  • Answer any resort-specific questions from guests.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate professionally to coworkers and guests.
  • Provide high level customer service to all guests.
  • Adhere to all policies, rules, and regulations of Vail Resorts and Afton Alps.
  • Create and maintain a productive and safe work environment, including the completion of all company mandated safety-related training and assessments.
  • Ensure all ski school locations are clean and present a professional appearance to our guests, staff, and purveyors.
  • Assist other departments, as needed.
  • Adhere to and role model the company’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Assist in other support activities of Ski and Snowboard programs as assigned by Supervisors. Assist with operational responsibilities of Ski and Snowboard programs including but not limited to registration processes, upkeep of outdoor teaching areas and cleanliness of facilities
  • Continue to develop your own personal skills through involvement in voluntary training opportunities and/or through PSIA/AASI educational opportunities.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

 

Requirements:

  • Significant racing and/or coaching experience in a USSA program.
  • Attend new hire training sessions.
  • PSIA or USSA Certification - Preferred.
  • Ability to communicate fluently with coworkers and guests in English.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Professionalism and strong guest service skills, attention to detail and timeliness.
  • Flexible schedule required during peak times throughout the year.  Must be willing to work evenings, holidays and weekends – Required.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to ensure: teamwork, high level guest contact, and commitment to guest service.
  • Must demonstrate ability to receive and give direction and act upon it.
  • Understand basic skiing and snowboarding terminology – Required.
  • Must be able to work in inclement winter weather.
  • Knowledge of local area/resort - Preferred.
  • Previous experience with teaching/coaching/mentoring children (if applicable) - Preferred.
