Responsibilities and Qualifications

Responsibilities:Develops and maintains age specific patient care standards:1.1 Identifies patient care standards specific to assigned area and age groups served. Demonstrates knowledge of the changes associated with specific age groups and the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patients needs.1.2 Monitors compliance to patient care standards through observations, communication and quality monitoring activities.1.3 Collaborates in the development of Performance Improvement teams and indicators.1.4 Reviews and revises patient care standards and quality monitors annually.1.5 Interprets Health Department and/or other review organizations standards for staff.1.6 Integrates Health Department and other review organization standards into unit specific standards of care.1.7 Incorporates patient care standards into Nursing Division and unit specific policies and procedures. Demonstrates the ability to provide and monitor care based on the physical, psycho/social, cultural, safety and other age related factors.

Utilizes the Nursing Process:2.1 Assesses compliance to age related patient care standards through observation and communication during daily rounds.2.2 Assesses patient care on all shifts by observation and communication (the 3-11 and 11-7 shifts at least quarterly).2.3 Assesses the provision of patient centered support services by unlicensed workers.2.4 Prescribes resolution of problems in patient care in a timely manner.2.5 Evaluates the effectiveness of patient care delivery in meeting patients needs, and takes action to improve care.2.6 Coordinates the development of a unit specific care delivery model which incorporates the completion of phlebotomy and ECG functions.2.7 Evaluates the performance of unlicensed care givers.2.8 Uses unit specific patient satisfaction survey to identify opportunities to improve care. Gathers data from a reasonable sample of patients and reports bi-weekly.

Communicates Effectively:3.1 Provides concise effective and accurate verbal and written communications regarding hospital and unit operations. Communicates with admitting regarding patient assignments when assigned to staffing office.3.2 Provides for verbal, taped or written report on patient status to clinical supervisors to ensure continuity of care.3.3 Seeks feed back on performance improvements efforts. Utilizes quality monitoring data to improve performance and engages staff in action and evaluation processes.3.4 Meets with staff at general staff meeting at least quarterly for information exchange and performance improvement reports.3.5 Meets with Director weekly to discuss unit activities and opportunities to improve patient care.3.6 Provides written reports as requested. Demonstrates expert knowledge of computer systems including the nursing, OE and OA modules.3.7 Demonstrates support for Administrative decisions.3.8 Identifies and implements mechanisms to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and integration of care.

Manages Financial Resources:4.1 Prepares, submits and administers the annual operating and capital equipment budgets.4.2 Demonstrates knowledge of unit specific history and developing trends in budget preparation.4.3 Provides budget for all proposed new positions or services. Documents justification.4.4 Monitors compliance to budget.4.5 Coordinates the utilization of manhours, capital expenditures and supplies within budget restrictions annually.

Manages Utilization of Equipment and Supplies:5.1 Informs staff of equipment and supply budget.5.2 Reviews supply utilization, adjusts par levels as needed.5.3 Intervenes effectively when staff experiences difficulty in getting needed supplies and/or equipment.5.4 Assures effective equipment maintenance by reporting faulty performance.5.5 Keeps track of unit equipment.Manages the Environment:6.1 Maintains an attractive, safe and clean environment.6.2 Implements measures to prevent or eliminate risk.6.3 Provides risk manager with documentation of situations which have or could cause harm to patient, staff, visitors or the institution.6.4 Uses incident and problem reports appropriately. Monitors staff utilization of these reports and provides direction when necessary.6.5 Collaborates with other departments to implement and monitor practices to reduce risk.

Manages Human Resources:7.1 Recruits, interviews, hires staff appropriate for an effective staffing pattern and skill mix.7.2 Develops staffing pattern based on historical patient acuity, budgeted positions and skill mix.7.3 Post schedules at least one week before first date listed on new schedule.7.4 Provides core staffing on all schedules submitted.7.5 Assures that employees are treated equitably and receive appropriate compensation for all worked hours.7.6 Completes performance evaluations in a timely manner, integrating check list with objective observation to assure competency of staff to practice or provide services in an area of patient care.7.7 Provides guidance and counseling for employees experiencing difficulties in work performance; documents according to policy.7.8 Directs student and orientation experiences on the unit.7.9 Keeps accurate, updated employee files which contain documentation of current licensure, CPR certification, record of continuing education and mandatory inservice attendance.

Promotes Personal and Staff Development:8.1 Meets the following annual certification requirements and attends mandatory educational events: a) CPR Infection Control BSE; and b) ACLS Fire and Safety.8.2 Performs new complex clinical procedures.8.3 Participate actively in peer group meetings.8.4 Promotes staff development. Assesses learning needs. Communicates with Education Department. Implements one-on-one or organized class Education as needed. Uses travel budget to provide learning experience when possible. Provides opportunities for staff to attend. Participates in low-cost educational opportunities provided by the hospital in OKC for the purpose of enhancing managerial and/or clinical skills.8.5 Participates in teams or committees as needed to improve agency or unit performance.8.6 Represents the Nursing Department as appointed by Director of Nursing or Vice President.8.7 Represents Mercy Health Center at community and hospital functions.

Qualifications:

* Licensure: Current Oklahoma Registered Nurse.

* Experience: At least 3 years current nursing experience required.
