POSITION SUMMARY:

Identifies, collects and reports database information relative to cancer/reportable tumors for Penrose-St. Francis Health Services and the Colorado Central Registry. Maintains patient follow-up according to the guidelines established by the American College of Surgeons, Colorado Central Registry and Penrose Cancer Committee. Acts as secretary for Cancer Committee and Tumor Board and performs other duties as requested.

POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Accurately abstracts information from patient records according to the standards established by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS). Obtains follow-up on abstracted cancer cases in which the date of last contact may be delinquent. Performs case finding of newly diagnosed cases through pathology, radiation, cytology and diagnoses index based on ICD-9/10 codes for malignancy.

* Responsible for assigning the appropriate International Classification of Diseases in Oncology (ICDO) codes for abstracted cases.

* Maintains knowledge of and assures compliance of the ACoS standards as they apply to the cancer registry.

* Provide data reports as requested. This includes providing registry data for the tumor board conference weekly relevant to the cases being presented.

* Meets the quality standards set by ACoS and the State Department of Health.

* Organize and coordinate the breast conference and cancer committee.

* Is responsible for the coordination of the TNM review/completeness by the physicians.

* Is responsible for one major project (in which registry data is used) within the department per year.

EDUCATION

Prefer ART or A.A. degree as Medical Record Technician

License None

Certification: Certified Tumor Registrar or willing to obtain certification within 2 years of employment

EXPERIENCE

2-3 years

If other: At least 2-3 years experience in the medical field. Comprehensive training in technical skills of ICD-9/ICDO and SEER coding. In depth education in anatomy, physiology, disease processes, and medical terminology. Other desired background to include skills in statistical data gathering, automated data processing, data organization skills.
