Responsibilities and Qualifications

This Associate Counsel is responsible to provide direct legal counsel and subject matter expertise for multiple routine functional areas, and one or more complex functional areas. Functional areas include a broad range of legal areas affecting Mercy's services and operations such as antitrust, tax, employment law, physician practice acquisitions; hospital operational support; health care risk management; clinical-related issues; regulatory compliance; medical staff and accreditation; clinical affiliation agreements; managed care contracting; real estate and construction; and health care reform and reimbursement. The Associate Counsel provides oversight of selected outside counsel or consultants as well as legal externs, Staff Attorneys and Assistant Counsel. The clients of an Associate Counsel will generally be those business or operations personnel in the areas for which subject matter expertise is being provided and certain mid-level committees or task forces within a community or across the ministry. The Associate Counsel provides complex legal analysis and recommendations for strategies and approaches directly to clients and to more senior counsel within the legal department.

Because you're committed to excellence, you understand the importance of being properly prepared for your role at Mercy. That's why you'll bring to your role the right set of qualifications:

* Education: Doctorate of Jurisprudence

* Experience: Membership in the Missouri Bar or eligibility for immediate admission

* Other: *Five (5) or more years experience as a practicing attorney with at least three (3) years of health care experience and specialized experience in one of more of the following areas: antitrust, tax, employment law, physician practice acquisitions; hospital operational support; health care risk management; clinical-related issues; regulatory compliance; medical staff and accreditation; clinical affiliation agreements; managed care contracting; real estate and construction; and health care reform and reimbursement. *Excellent oral and written communication skills.
