Lutheran Social Services of WI & Upper MI wants you to join the team at Homme Youth and Family Programs, a nationally known treatment program serving children and adolescents dealing with issues of sexual perpetration, delinquency, victimization, AODA, cognitive behavioral issues or dual diagnosis, and independent living support as a Youth Counselor.  Our programs provide structured daily schedules and activities, sight and/or sound supervision, individual and group therapy, family therapy when possible, spiritual care if desired, on-campus educational services, and reintegration to the community.  Our multidisciplinary team of trained counselors, therapists, advocates and teachers provides wraparound care through psychiatric, educational, clinical and milieu services that support each youth and family throughout treatment using a trauma-informed care approach.

Our Youth Counselors work directly on the units maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment for youth clients.  Through the philosophy of trauma informed care YC’s acknowledge  past traumas and support the clients in treatment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interacts with clients on an individual or group basis providing guidance, positive role modeling, and a positive supportive influence
  • Maintaining sight and sound supervision at all times, provides oversight and care for clients in residential settings and in the community within established policies and procedures
  • Records observations relating to actions and behavior of clients and maintains records and reports as required; daily documentation, i.e. weeklies, logs
  • Monitors access to bathroom/shower to ensure personal hygiene of clients
  • Maintaining sight and sound supervision at all times, transports and escorts clients between facilities, meetings, appointments, and/or other activities
  • Organizes and distributes clothing, bedding, toilet articles, and other supplies
  • Ensures clients and their living space are organized, safe and free of contraband
  • Prepare meals and/or supervise clients during meal preparation, eating, and clean up
  • Within established guidelines, provides information to and interacts with parents, referring workers, therapists, and other professionals concerning the status of clients

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or GED equivalency is required. Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services., which includes Social Work, Psychology or Sociology, Law Enforcement or a closely related field preferred. A minimum of one (1) year of work experience in the field of Human Services is preferred.

  • Working knowledge and understanding of child development
  • Possess emotional integrity to work with challenging at-risk youth and families
  • Have the ability to use patience, self-control and flexibility when required; have the ability to accept and follow through with direction; and possess the ability to recognize boundaries.

Must have a valid Driver’s License and car – Motor vehicle check (MVR) with a satisfactory driving record required.

Requirements

There are multiple opportunities currently available, primarily 2nd or 3rd shift.  There is a shift differential of $1.50/hr for 3rd shift roles.  These are third shift, awake positions, typcally 4, 10 hour days.
