The primary purpose of the Cake Decorator is to create an outstanding customer experience through exceptional service. The Cake Decorator should smile, greet and be courteous to customers, work with management and all other associates to provide a high level of customer service. The Cake Decorator will maintain and operate the bakery department in an efficient manner.

The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

General

• Observe all store rules and company policies

• Greet all customers and provide them with prompt and courteous service or assistance.

• Maintain a neat, well-groomed personal appearance at all times and observe the company dress code; must wear an approved hat or hair net

• Gain and maintain knowledge of products sold within the department and be able to respond to questions and make suggestions about products

• Observe shift operating hours at all times as scheduled or assigned by the Bakery Manager

• Adhere to all local, state, and federal health and civil code regulations including full compliance with all applicable laws pertaining to safety, health, and packaging requirements

• Assist in receiving and unloading of merchandise. Check and verify grocery receiving to ensure that items listed on vendor invoices are all delivered. Check products for quality, count, and condition

• Keep all bakery ingredients or merchandise rotated in accordance with Company Policy and product code dates and always make use of the oldest products first (first in, first out)

• Control freshness by coding all product and pulling out-of-code merchandise daily

• Handle damaged and spoiled products according to company policy and assist in controlling the level of damaged goods

• Take stock of storage or shelf areas

• Answer phones and take special orders

• Fill customer special orders, including custom cakes

• Wrap, package, and price all product accurately and legibly in accordance with established procedures and guidelines

• Decorate cakes using the precise measurements and scales set by Bakery Manager

• Decorate cakes to customer specifications and prepare them on time for customer pickup

• Perform all counter duties according to company policies and procedures

• Perform other duties and assignments as directed

Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age. High School Education preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience in bakery department preferred. Culinary education a plus.

Mathematical Skills:

• Be able to perform arithmetical calculations at the eighth-grade level in order to handle sales transactions, tender change, calculate percentages and ratios, discounts, gross margins, and apply concepts of basic algebra

• Be able to verify vendor invoice charges and counts, and complete required accounting reports including inventory, receiving, and variations in cash or column totals.

Language Skills:

• Ability to hear, speak and understand the spoken word in order to respond promptly to pages for assistance, to accommodate verbal requests from customers for information or assistance, to answer telephones, and to be able to communicate effectively with department employees, the store’s co-workers and customers

• Ability to read, write, analyze, interpret and understand the English language with sufficient proficiency in order to read and understand:

1. Instructions for operating electronic equipment and tools

3. Other written job related documents including postings on company bulletin boards.

• Ability to fill out forms properly and compose and write reports, including effective departmental memos, employee corrective action notices, “menus”, and customer signs or sales suggestions.

Reasoning Ability:

• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in circumstances where only limited standardization may exist.

• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in diagram, oral, schedule, or written forms.

May require morning, afternoon, and evening availability any day of the week.

• Safety Risk Factors – Twisting, slippery floor surfaces, cluttered floor surfaces, toxic exposure, nuisance dust, fumes, hot equipment surfaces, sprays, hazardous cleaning solutions, operation of department equipment

• Machines, Tools, Equipment – Fryer, ovens, bread slicer, kitchen utensils, scales, mixers, shrink film wrapper, roller racks, pricing gun, compactor, water hose, cake machine

• Successful performance requires specific vision abilities that include close vision and the ability to adjust focus including possessing sufficient visual acuity to verify invoices and other written documents

• Be able to climb a ladder to retrieve items from overhead racks and storage areas

• Be able to sweep and mop floors and lift and carry out trash containers to be emptied in an outside bin

• Have sufficient physical mobility or agility to be able to respond quickly to fire or other emergencies such as cleanup requests due to accidental spills or breakage of glass

• Be able to stock coolers and shelves and endure working under temperature extremes in both refrigerated storage and heated cooking areas up to 20 minutes at a time

• Be able to work with fresh meat, fruits, vegetables, spices, sauces, flour and other food products without negative allergic consequences that affect performance

• Be able to tolerate moderate amounts of dust and chemical fumes from common household cleaning agents such as ammonia during routine housekeeping duties
