Position Summary

The Virtual RN will develop the plan of care and provide comprehensive care coordination and supervisory oversight of the care of the patients remotely on an inpatient unit. The Virtual RN will support the virtual care model to include a Virtual Command Center (VCC) where the virtual nurse will direct the care of the patient. The Virtual RN nurse will interact with the care team and patients, families, and care providers for the purpose of meeting the needs of the patient. The Virtual RN assumes accountability for patient care outcomes through the assimilation and application of evidence based practice to design, implement, and evaluate patient plans of care in a virtual environment setting. The Virtual RN will design, implement, and evaluate patient care by coordinating, delegating and supervising the care provided by the care team, including registered nurses, technicians, and other health professionals. A high degree of professional competence and autonomy will be demonstrated in performing the roles of 1) clinician, 2) educator, 3) consultant/collaborator, 4) leader.

Minimum Education Requirements

* Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing

* BSN preferred

Minimum Experience Requirements

* 3 years of RN experience in an acute care setting

* 2 years RN team leadership experience

* 1 year of nurse educator experience preferred

* Ability to demonstrate at least intermediate computer skills and comfort with working with Windows operating systems, medical record technology and ease of familiarity with tele/virtual monitoring equipment

* Ability to receive and understand information relayed through oral or electronic communication and excellent communication skills to relay information electronically or verbally to the interdisciplinary care team

License/Certifications

* Current Colorado RN license

* Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association

* ACLS certification required within 6 months of hire

Position Duties

* Collaborates virtually with physicians, nurses and other health care team members in the provision of clinical care for the patient.*

* Assesses virtually the medical, physical, and psychological status of patients by reviewing patient records, obtaining a comprehensive problem-oriented health history and monitoring and evaluating laboratory, x-ray, EKG, and other diagnostic studies as medically indicated.*

* Interprets available data in order to establish a primary plan of care. The Plan is developed through an interdisciplinary team approach and through multi-dimensional patient care conference, ongoing patient assessments, and re-evaluation of patient problems or needs.*

* Prioritizes clinical information accurately and in a timely manner.*

* Responds to routine, urgent and emergent patient problems appropriately by demonstrating effective decision-making and provides follow-up to ensure that patient problems are resolved.*

* Works to prevent patient problems from occurring by: direct observation via telemedicine technology, proactive surveillance of adverse physiological trends, assurance of appropriate prophylactic strategies, and medical chart review.*

* Effectively communicates with members of the bedside interdisciplinary team in a collegial manner to provide safe and error-free care during routine and emergent conditions. Provides courteous and enthusiastic phone communication to interdisciplinary team.*

* Serves as an advocate on behalf of patients and their families in regards to their needs and wants concerning their care.*

* Prioritizes and effectively handles multiple electronic devices and software applications in a professional and courteous manner to include the ability to manage data and create reports electronically.*

* Coaches and mentors nurses on the floor around the care of the patient.*

* Virtually educates the patient and families on disease process, procedures.*

* Virtually assesses and reassesses patients as appropriate.*

* Works to exceed national benchmarks for quality care delivery, cost containment and length of stay indicators.*

* Document ongoing status, interventions, patient response and outcomes in accurate, timely manner.*

* Use information technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making.*

* Adapts to rapidly changing technology as evidenced by competency in technology and equipment used in the patient care setting.*
