A Dental Assistant is a vital member of the dental health team. As a dental assistant, you will be responsible for a broad spectrum of duties, such as:

While under supervision of the dentist, assist the dentist in rendering chairside duties as required of four-handed dentistry. Must be able to pass instruments to dentist during procedures, as well as take and process dental x-rays. For each appointment, lay out instruments and materials needed to treat the patient, and make patients feel comfortable in the dental chair before and during treatment. During treatment, dental assistant keeps patient's mouth dry by suctioning. Additional duties also include, but are not limited to: properly applying sealants, cavity liners, varnishes and bases; preliminary charting of existing restorations and oral conditions; inserting and removing dressings from alveolar sockets; removing surgical dressings; placing or removing rubber dams; placing or removing temporary restorations with non-mechanical hand instruments; polishing amalgam restorations; applying topical fluorides; removing surgical dressings; taking impressions; developing and processing dental x-rays; sterilizing instruments; cleaning and maintaining dental equipment and operatory room according to established OSHA and clinic guidelines; keeping operatory room well-stocked with all necessary supplies and materials; providing Oral Hygiene instructions on how to improve and maintain good oral health habits; participating with maintaining dental supplies and order current; informing supervisor items which are broken or in need of repair. Is available to work at each satellite clinics when needed.

Dental Assistant will be capable of performing front desk duties as needed. This includes, but is not limited to, calling to confirm appointments, scheduling clients, printing clinic schedules, and/or completing data entry into HMS.

Assists in planning and evaluating dental education services; participates with dental education service to schools, nursing homes, and day care centers; represents the dental division at various community meetings and fairs.

Emergency Duty -- Incumbent may be required to work during or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.

Dental assistants must be detail-oriented, organized, reliable, and have strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills to work with patients, dentists, and other dental office staff. They must anticipate the needs of the dentist during a procedure, and have good hand and finger dexterity to perform tasks. The Assistant must be able to properly use and maintain dental equipment, set up instrument trays, prepare patient, sterilize and disinfect instruments.

Effective written and verbal communication skills for delivering patient oral care instructions and documentation of dental charting are necessary, as are the abilities to work independently and to perform basic computer operations, such as typing.

Must have valid Florida driver license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

Must have reliable personal motorized transportation, i.e. automobile or similar vehicle, in the event incumbent maybe required to work at his/her non-designate site.
