Responsibilities

Coordinate, manage and process unit communications and information. 1.1 Accurately performs responsibilities involved in the admission, transfer, referral and dismissal of patients to and from the unit.1.2 Assures correct processing and transciption of orders and charges.1.3 Assures that the patient census and acuity are updated correctly on time daily; adjust patient data book with complete information when changes occur in census or acuity.1.4 Answers phone by 3rd ring and directs need promptly to correct person.1.5 Schedules tests and outside agency services as ordered/directed.1.6 Performs typing/word processing, copying, faxing as needed.1.7 Track Metabolic Screening of NICU infants; assures tests due are alerted to staff and results are obtained.Manage special supplies, equipment and work areas.2.1 Maintain Operator's Manual cabinet for NICU equipment.2.2 Perform and document equipment inventory as scheduled; submit reports as needed; track out-of-unit NICU equipment; assures that NICU items are returned to unit when use is complete elsewhere.2.3 Perform scheduled special supply inventory on time; orders special supplies, and process them based on inventory findings, weekly.2.4 Assures that all charts are adequately stocked 2.5 Keep patient notebooks adequately supplied and stocked with the appropriate forms.2.6 Tracks all rental equipment.2.7 Assures all patient information is entered in all appropriate databases.2.8 Schedules all inpatient pediatric opthamology exams as assigned by charge nurse.Patient Care Skills - Provides and documents basic, age-appropriate care to patients under the direct supervision of an RN.3.1 Delivers and documents physical care and comfort measures to assigned patients in a safe and efficient manner and which promotes self-regulatory behaviors of the child. 3.2 Demonstrates competence in performing technical procedures.3.3 Provides emotional support and considers patient and family needs. Provides therapeutic touch (holding, rocking, back rub) as needed and tolerated by the patient.3.4 Organizes and prioritizes workload to complete assignments during shift.3.5 Provides care based on the physical, psychosocial, cultural, safety and other aspects of the neonate, infant, child and adolescent and adult.3.6 Obtains and interprets information in terms understandable to the verbal child/adolescent and adult significant other.3.7 Assists nurse and physician with procedures listed in NICU/Pediatric Skills Inventory.3.8 Provided other patient care tasks within cope of competencies as assigned.Lab Skills - assists the nurse in timely specimen obtaining by assuring proper delivery to the laboratory.4.1 Properly places specimen in biohazard bags and bubble wrap as specified by laboratory.4.2 Follows infection control techniques in handling of specimens.4.3 Differentiates between specimens that are able to be tubed to lab and those needing hand deliver, and delivers accordingly.Equipment and Enviroment of Care - assists the nurse in application and operation of equipment. Assures that the patient's environment is conducive to rest, safety, recovery or rehabilitation.5.1 Operates equipment accurately, including patient care and support equipment.5.2 Assures proper cleaning and storage of equipment housed on the unit.5.3 Assures that the patient's environment is orderly, clean and safe.5.4 Assures adequate stock of essential supplies for patient care, desk and supply areas.5.5 Performs point of care testing according to tech skills inventory.5.6 Competently uses appropriate sections of EMR.Physical Activity - assists with patient cares as delegated by nursing staff.6.1 Assists with patient transport.6.5 Maintains proper body alignment in positioning and moving equipment6.6 Provides developmentally appropriate approaches to children of all ages handling and providing cares and collecting data.6.7 Encourages and engages parent(s) / other family members to participate in basic care of the infant, as directed by the RN.Documentation/Reporting - Documents and reports care delivered under the direct supervision of an RN.7.1 Recognizes changes in patient status and reports accurate information to the RN and/or therapist in a timely manner.7.2 Communicates accurate and appropiate information to the patient, family, and visitors; refering to the RN when needed.7.3 Reports results of cares, tasks and treatments to the responsible nurse.Interpersonal Skills/Teamwork - contributes to the smooth operation of the unit.8.1 Conducts self in manner that demonstrates commitment to a children's service philosophy for the health center.8.2 Demonstrate attentiveness to the patient's family and treats the parent(s) of a child as a member of the health care team.8.3 Participates in unit development and decision making through such task force and/or special project work.8.4 Creates a positive climate for communication.8.5 Uses constructive problem solving techniques to promote change and deal with issues. Follows established channels for addressing issues, concerns and problems.8.6 Remains current in unit and hospital changes through such methods as participating in and attending staff meetings (min. 75%) and reviewing electronic and posted communications at least biweekly.Productivity - Is a productive member of the patient care unit team.9.1 Independently completes duties with appropriate supervision.9.2 Utilizes time in an efficient manner, completing duties in a timely fashion.9.3 Assists with extra duty to cover staffing needs.9.4 Limits the frequency of special scheduling requests.9.5 Demonstrates initiative in seeking out appropriate additional duties9.6 Participates in Performance Improvement activities.Safety - Maintaining a safe environment for patients and coworkers.10.1 Recognizes unsafe conditions and takes action or reports conditions to supervisor immediately.10.2 Adheres to universal precautions and principles of asepsis.10.3 Demonstrates awareness of and concern for patient safety.Demonstrates awareness of and concern for patient safety.11.1 Maintains current certification in CPR.11.2 Attends all mandatory inservices and meetings.11.3 Complies with all organizational policies, procedures and protocols with no documented violations.11.4 Adheres to OSHA standards regarding appropriate safety regulations and procedures, including fit testing for appropriate filtration mask yearly and as needed.11.5 Maintains competency in NICU/Pediatric Units tech skills inventory.11.6 Accurately completes clocking transactions.11.7 Maintains hospital property and the hospital environment in a safe, clean and intact condition.11.8 Maintains strict confidentiality of patient, staff, and organization information from verbal, written and electronic sources.
