Resident Assistant Summary

Responsible for providing basic personal service to residents under the direction and supervision of a RN or LPN.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Resident's Hygiene

* Assure Residents' hygiene, toileting habits and bathing/sponge baths schedules are adhered to ensure resident is clean and odor-free.

Attention to Resident

* Verifies identity of Resident receiving medication, checks the MAR to assure correct medication is being given, and records time of administration or self-administration on specified forms or records. (Determined by community policy and State regulations).

* Supervises the self-administration of medications by presenting medication to Resident and observing ingestion or other application, or administers medication to assure all medication is being taken as directed. (Determined by community policy and State regulations).

* Obtains and records Resident's vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration rates), and weight as directed.

* Monitors pendant system and answers Residents' call signals to determine Residents' needs in 15 minutes or less according to Assisted Living Facility Standards.

* Assists resident with dressing as needed and assigned, so that resident will be dressed appropriately for season and time of day.

* Assists residents with ambulation and transferring as needed and assigned so that residents can move safely through the building. Includes but not limited to removing items from their path in room, encouraging residents to use ambulatory devices as needed and providing security when bathing, dressing, & walking as necessary.

* Provides verbal reminders to residents as needed when it is time for meals, activities, bedtime etc.

* Assists with meal service by serving residents, providing necessary refills or seconds and removing dishes as residents are finished eating. Bus tables after meals to assist in cleaning the dining room.

* Observes resident for change in condition and report any unusual occurrence to the Director of Nursing and/or Assistant Director of Nursing.

* Completes incident report in its entirety for any unusual occurrence, event, or change in condition including only information pertinent to the incident (no elaboration).

* Provides miscellaneous assistance to resident such as helping reach something, find a lost item, redirect as needed, and so forth.

Room Cleanliness/Safety

* Assists residents with clothes laundering process by locating and identifying soiled clothing, sorting clothing as needed and laundering clothes according to manufacturer's suggestions. Assure clean clothes are hung neatly in closet or folded in dresser drawers.

* Assists housekeeper in keeping resident apartment clean and clutter-free. Make resident beds, empty trash container, and pick up clutter.

* Clean common areas as assigned and appropriate to shift.

Residents' Privacy

* Observes Resident privacy by knocking on doors before entering, assuring privacy during baths or bathroom time, and while dressing and undressing.

* Maintains confidentiality of all personal or health information concerning residents and staff.

Residents' Independence

* Encourages Residents to do things for themselves to retain feeling of independence and self-esteem. Maintains dignity of resident in all instances.

* Escorts or encourages residents to attend activities to assure each resident has ample opportunity to participate in activities of choice.

Professional Development

* Completes daily paperwork as required to assure all assigned duties are being performed for each resident. Assures Resident Assistance have completed daily records

* Maintains regular punctual attendance as scheduled to assure no shift is short of personal care assistant to care for the residents.

* Stay awake at all times during shift.

* Attend all scheduled in-services

* Assists in training new associates as assigned.

* Is fully knowledgeable of the fire evacuation and disaster policy of the community and participates as assigned in fire and disaster drills.

* Other duties as assigned and which relate to the success of Assisted Living Facility

Position Requirements

Competencies

Basic knowledge of resident daily care needs, ie bathing transferring, grooming and dining assistance.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position is an individual contributor and does not manage/supervise other employees.

Work Environment

This job operates in a nursing home /assisted living environment.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally/frequently/continuously required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. Sensory abilities required by the job include close vision and hearing.

Preferred Education and Experience

* High school or GED

* 1 year or more experience
