The Zoo’s skilled trades professionals work behind-the-scenes to keep our mechanical, structural, and equipment needs serviced and running smoothly. 

We have an immediate opening for a PAINTER / General Maintenance Technician.  The PAINTER / General Maintenance Technician will primarily focus on painting interior and exterior surfaces, maintaining related equipment, surface preparation, and drywall repair/replacement.  Expert knowledge of different types of paints and surface coatings is required.

Must also have the ability to read and apply directions that relate to the mixture, use, and application of various kinds of coating materials, solvents, and pre-coating agents, for example, paint, varnish, epoxy, Teflon, paint remover, alkali and phosphate compounds, pickling mixtures, and anti-growth agents.

As part of the Facilities team, this role will also assist with a wide variety of routine maintenance such as replacing light bulbs and doorknobs, fixture installation, and changing filters. The successful candidate must be able to follow instructions (written and verbal), be a cooperative team player, and remain flexible in assignments.

The work schedule will require working some weekends, holidays and overtime as needed.  Different shift work may be required due to business demands.  Must have a valid Indiana driver’s license (or obtain one within 30 days of hire), and have a driving record that is insurable by the Zoo’s insurance company.

 

Working Requirements, Physical Demands, and Conditions:

 

  1. Must have a High School Diploma/G.E.D., and at least two (2) years of professional work experience in residential or commercial paining.
  2. Unwavering commitment to safety.
  3. Required to climb ladders and scaffolding, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, stand, walk, push, pull and lift.
  4. Required to perform physically demanding, heavy work, which includes lifting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  5. Must have computer skills and “Intermediate” knowledge in Word, Excel, and Outlook programs.
  6. Works indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather, exposed to temperatures ranging from -10 to 90+ degrees.
  7. Adheres to all safety policies, and wears proper safety equipment (PPE) including dust masks, respirators, goggles, hearing protectors, and safety harness.
  8. Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Blood borne Pathogens Guidelines.  Possible occupational exposure (Category A employee) to human blood borne pathogens. 
  9. Works around equipment that has a significant noise level, and exposed to strong smelling materials and substances.  Exposed to various solvents, chemicals, and cleaning solutions.
  10. Works dusty conditions and pollens.
  11. Must be comfortable working at heights while using proper fall restraint procedures and equipment.

 

Compensation for this entry level position ranges between $14.50 and $15.25, depending upon experience.  Please indicate your hourly rate requirement on the application.
