Responsibilities

1. Ensures a clean safe workplace which is stocked with necessary supplies.1.1 Conduct walk-through of assigned rooms and restock emergency rooms with needed supplies each day at the beginning of the shift.1.2 Empty trash and linen containers at beginning and end of shift.1.3 Stocks linen daily and returns cart to clean utility room.1.4 Clean rooms after each patient use: Clean carrier, change sheets, restock supplies, dispose of used linen, trash, trays, instruments and other equipment.1.5 Instruments are sent to sterlie processing daily1.6 Perform thorough cleaning of exam room as necessary; i.e. surface clean.2. Maintain equipment, instruments and tray in good working order.2.1 Ensure that oxygen tanks are full and in proper location each week.2.2 Clean and bag instruments for processing daily.2.3 Gather ED equipment throughout the hospital and return to ED weekly.2.4 Maintain the equipment and supply area and the soiled holding area in near order daily.3. Patient care skills -- assist with basic, age-appropriate nursing care to patient under the direct supervision of the RN and assist the nursing staff in the routine care of the emergency patient according to standard policy and procedure.3.1 Delivers physical care, comfort measure and elimination needs to assign patients in a safe and efficient manner.3.2 Demonstrates competence in performing technique procedures for which he/she has demonstrated competency.3.3 Provides emotional support and considers patient and family needs.3.4 Organizes and prioritizes workload to complete assignments during shift.3.5 Assist the primary nurse in providing care to the patient.3.6 Assist the physician in patient examination and treatment.3.7 Performs 12 lead EKG on the patient within 3 minutes of a STAT order and 10 minutes of a routine order, according to MHC polices and procedures.3.8 Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate lead placement for routine cardiac monitoring and 12 lead EKG.3.9 Demonstrates skill in trouble shooting problems with equipment.3.10 Assists in safe and efficient transportation of the ED patient to and from private auto and to hospital room.3.11 Provide a safe environment for the patient who requires observation and/or restraint.4. Performs patient procedures.4.1 maintain rigid accuracy in identification of all patients4.2 demonstrates knowledge of specimen labeling procedures and applies knowledge by correctly and accurately labeling all specimens4.3 demonstrates ability to correctly perform venipuncture and capillary drawing techniques as assessed by supervisor and maintain a minimum repeat draw and unsuccessful draw rate;4.4 demonstrates an understanding of specimen suitability for testing by awareness of proper anticoagulation and special handling techniques as designated in the laboratory procedure manual; 4.5 notifies supervisor in a timely manner of all problems with phlebotomy duties; 4.6 demonstrates ability to read and review physician orders so that test are not missed and samples doe not have to be redrawn.4.7 demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks with particular emphasis on response to STATS, ASAPs, timed draws, etc. an arranges for timely delivery of specimens to the laboratory; 4.8 skills list to include but not limited to: venipuncture technique, capillary puncture technique, timed draws, blood culture collection, blood banking procedures, and ABG's after certification.4.9 Recognizes changes in patient status and reports appropriate information to the RN in a timely manner.4.10 Obtains urine specimens (via CCUA, catheter, etc), stool specimens (for culture or stool guaiac), wound cultures using appropriate technique after training and certification.4.11 Performs and documents blood pressure and heart rate recording to lying, sitting and standing positions (tilt) in a safe manner and notifies RN of patient response in a timely manner.4.12 Applies simple dressing using proper aseptic technique.4.13 Notifies ancillary departments and appropriate individuals re: lab, x-rays, EKG, treatments, etc.5. Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication.5.1 Greets visitors, screens individuals and coordinates activity of ancillary departments interfacing with the ER.5.2 Communicates with patient, family, visitors and employees respectfully; communicates pertinent information to charge nurse and/or staff nurse.6. Interpersonal skills/teamwork and productivity -- Demonstrates a positive attitude and willingness to facilitate unit functioning and is a productive member of the patient care unit team.6.1 Demonstrates a willingness to assist when asked.6.2 Demonstrates flexibility in responding to patient/unit needs.6.3 Demonstrates a respectful manner toward patients.6.4 Willingly floats to other shifts when necessary to provide for patient care needs.6.5 Shows independence by completing duties with appropriate supervision.6.6 Utilizes time in an efficient manner, completing duties in a timely fashion. 6.7 Shows initiative in seeking out appropriate additional duties.6.8 Respects and maintains patient confidentiality.7. Participates in department functions and performs other duties as assigned by charge nurse. Safety-maintains a safe environment for patients and coworkers.7.1 Recognizes unsafe conditions and takes action or reports conditions to supervisor immediately. 7.2 Adheres to universal precautions and principles of asepsis.7.3 Demonstrates awareness of and concern for patient safety.7.4 Assists patients in transfer using proper body mechanics and transfer techniques.7.5 Complies with hospital and department policies, procedures, rules and regulations.7.6 Attends 75% of staff meetings and reads minutes to all others.7.7 Maintains current BLS-C training.7.8 Maintains strict confidentiality.7.9 Attends 100% of the mandatory inservices.8. Performs clerical duties efficiently when assigned to desk duty.8.1 Page ancillary departments for STAT and routine procedures and maintains log to track response times.8.2 Answer phone calls within timely manner with disbursement to appropriate personnel using effective telephone courtesy.8.3 Greet visitors and coordinate activity of ancillary depts. Interfacing with the ER.

Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or GED certificate. Patient care experience required. BLS-C Training required. Nursing Students or EMT students preferred. Must have good oral communication skills both in person and over the phone to greet people and take messages and make arrangements. Medical terminology knowledge preferred. Must be able to stand or walk the majority of the shift. Able to push patients weighing up to 250 lbs. In a wheelchair or carrier. Able to lift up to 50 lbs. Frequently bends and lifts during shift. Must complete ER Tech orientation and MHC orientation. Must be able to type and operate a computer.Licensure: Experience: Certifications: BLS required.
