This job is responsible for performing various collection and laboratory analysis on blood, urine and other body specimens to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Specific areas of accountability may include all or one of the following disciplines: microbiology, urinalysis, coagulation, toxicology, chemistry, serology, hematology, phlebotomy and specimen processing.

Essential Duties:

* Performs specimen collections (when indicated) and laboratory analysis according to established protocol.

* Assesses the plausibility of results.

* Performs scheduled maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.

* Operates LIS functions as pertains to assigned duties.

* Maintains appropriate levels of supplies and reagents.

* Keeps abreast of new technical and theoretical procedures, departmental policies and procedures, and continuing education.

* Assists with the orientation and training of new employees and students.

* Performs similar and incidental duties as assigned.

* Demonstrates competency in adjusting interactions and the delivery of care and/or clinical technique appropriate to address the age specific needs of the patient and/or customer.

Education:

* Associate degree and completion of an approved Medical Laboratory Technician program,

* OR Associate degree and three years experience within the last five years, preferably in a Clinical Laboratory setting.

Experience:

* Successful completion of a six-month internship in a clinical laboratory setting within the last five years.

* One to two years of clinical laboratory experience in the last five years is preferred.

License/Certification:

* National Registration as an MLT (ASCP), CLT (NCA) or equivalent, or current application submitted for registry, pending exam.
