DESCRIPTION:
This is an exceptional opportunity for an LPN with immunizations experience to develop those skills while working with a dynamic team at the Florida Department of Health -- Sarasota County. This is a Career Service position, stationed primarily in North Port, but must be willing to work in Sarasota if requested (use of county car available). Preference will be given to someone with Travelers' Health Experience.
Provides direct public health nursing services within the scope of nursing practice using established core standards, policies and procedures, under the guidance of the Nursing Program Specialist at each site, and supervision of the Immunization Program Director.
REQUIREMENTS:
Licensure as a Practical Nurse in accordance with Florida Statute 464.015 is required.
Valid Florida driver's license and reliable transportation are required.
Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours in the event of a disaster or as needed.
Participation in the direct deposit program within 30 days of employment as mandated per Florida Statute 110. 113, 96-310, Laws of Florida is a requirement in this position.
Selected immunizations are a prerequisite for this position (MMWR Vol. 46/No.RR-18).
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Actively participates in immunization clinics for children and adults, including travelers' health.
Educates client and/or family members regarding immunizations, disease process and transmission; provides and discusses with client applicable Vaccine Information Statements prior to each injection.
Performs nursing appraisals, particularly of clients' vaccination needs and their immediate response to Immunizations received, ensuring continuity of care.
Uses FL SHOTS immunization registry system to verify the immunizations each client requires, prior to discussing needs with client or drawing up vaccines.
Enters all vaccines administered into Florida SHOTS in real time and consistently imports into the HMS system all vaccines provided.
Administers immunizations to all age groups in accordance with established agency, DOH, ACIP, and CDC guidelines.
Keeps abreast of current ACIP and CDC recommendations and vaccine updates across the lifespan.
Ensures adequate supplies of necessary forms and literature are maintained in the clinic.
Keeps up to date with CDC Travelers' Health advisories and maintains skills with teaching travel precautions, including malaria prophylaxis use, to clients.
Administers Tuberculin Skin Tests (TSTs) and interprets them with demonstrated expertise.
Assists TB Program by providing DOT to south county LTBI clients, maintaining correct documentation
Provides excellent customer service, going beyond what is required with every client and every internal and external customer (i.e. teammates, co-workers, vendors, interagency contacts, etc.).
Performs all nursing activities according to Health Department protocols and LPN Licensure.
Acts to ensure the integrity of the vaccine supply
Assists with daily vaccine counts, recording and uploading data logger temps, and other routine functions as requested by Nursing Program Specialists at each site.
Assists with response to Sensaphone Alarm System in the event of an emergency with out of range refrigerator or freezer temps.
Assists with vaccine transport if requested. Assures that Program Director is notified of any untoward situations that arise.
Maintains the Perinatal Hepatitis B Program
Enters new cases into the Merlin reporting system
Ensures that neonates receive birth dose of Hepatitis B vaccine and completes full series, on time
Ensures that all program guidelines for both mother and baby are adhered to and all documentation is timely and accurate.
Miscellaneous Activities
Attends team meetings, ECDC staff meetings, DOH-Sarasota staff meetings and participates in staff development activities as requested.
Maintains client confidentiality in a manner consistent with chapter 384.29, F.S. and DOH policy.
Performs other duties as assigned, with adjustable scheduling as required.
Completes a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education annually, per agency policy, including all required annual trainings.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION:
Knowledge of nursing principles and techniques
Knowledge of CDC Travel Vaccine protocols strongly preferred but will train right person
Skill with administration of parenteral injections to all age groups
Skill with administration and interpretation of Tuberculin Skin Testing (TST)
Ability to adhere to CDC, ACIP and other guidelines and regulations for service delivery
Ability to effectively educate clients about vaccines and the disease states against which they protect
Outstanding internal and external customer service skills are a must
Ability to interpret and follow medical instructions
Ability communicate effectively and courteously, in a culturally sensitive manner
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others
Ability to solve problems creatively
Ability to prioritize and organize tasks for maximum efficiency
Must possess basic computer skills
Proficiency with FL SHOT and HMS strongly preferred
Fluency in Spanish, Russian and/or Ukrainian is preferred
