Position Title: Product Renovation Lead

Position Location: Salisbury, NC or Quincy, MA

Position Objective:

Responsible for owning, identifying, creating solutions and delivering product renovation, in line with Global and RBS Sustainability goals, across the assigned Private Brands (PB) portfolio of products and collaborating with PB Innovation Team and PB Nutritionists. Work with PB Product Owners and Categories to highlight opportunities for renovation that widen the gap between Private Brands and competitors and increase differentiation. Identify novel functional ingredients to increase differentiation through renovation of Private Brand products and leveraging Culinary Center team to bring these concepts to life. Execute guardrails and processes of product development in order to ensure full alignment with brand standards and become famous for Private Brands. Oversee the development and implementation of the nutrition strategy for Private Brands. Ensure compliance with nutritional guidelines for the Private Brands portfolio in order to ensure full alignment with brand standards and become famous for Private Brands. Champion the Guiding Stars application across products in the Private Brands portfolio.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Product Improvement and Renovation

Establishes product renovation as a competitive advantage from financial and consumer perspectives

* Continually seeks opportunities, in conjunction with suppliers, PB Product Owners and Category Managers, to drive renovation, reduce overall costs and improve quality of product (as appropriate) in assigned categories.

* Identifies product renovations which will improve products from at least one aspect; nutrient, ingredient and/or quality perspective, without sacrificing taste.

* Responsible for implementation of Private Brands renovation projects leveraging PB CoEs to execute.

* Identifies and collaborates with functional ingredient suppliers and manufacturers to bring innovative ingredients to aid renovation efforts and improve Private Brand products. Works with Product Innovation Owners and Culinary Center team, as relevant.

* Ensures product lines are appropriate for the designated customer segment and in line with PB Brand Equity standards to make us Famous for Private Brands and pass product validation and customer/associate sensory panels.

* Identifies, recommends and executes product formulation improvements, working in partnership with suppliers.

* Drive Private Brands to meet nutrition goals for fat, salt, sugar and other targeted ingredients without compromising brand equity or sacrificing consumer acceptance. Ensure the PB Nutritionists monitor and report progress.

* In collaboration with PB Nutritionists, establishes the strategic path to renovate or improve the nutritional content and/or formula of the Private Brands portfolio of products (e.g. sugar, salt reduction, MSG removal, synthetic color replacement).

* Monitors and reports on progress towards Private Brands renovation goals and KPI's.

* Understands Guiding Stars rating system to deliver products that maintain or increase the Guiding Stars rating through focused renovation and leverages the PB Nutritionists where necessary.

* Drives financial results by providing renovation options that differentiate the brand from other products in the marketplace or are equally preferred to national brand items, but with higher margins in assigned categories.

* Works with RBS Sustainability & Wellness team and, as relevant, with Group Support Office Sustainability through reporting of PB contribution to sustainability goals.

* Exudes a high degree of credibility and the ability to work with and through all levels of management (including Category Management leadership).

2. Nutrition Strategy

Leads efforts around Private Brands Nutrition Strategy and supports Global Sustainability nutrition goals

* In collaboration with the PB nutritionists, develops and executes nutrition guidelines, strategies and codes of best practice standards for all Private Brands in the areas of nonperishable, fresh and edible non-foods.

* Collaborate with the Global Support Office Sustainability regarding nutrition.

* Maintain awareness of nutrition goals and Guiding Stars program across the Private Brands team and across RBS and Brands, as relevant.

* Tracks and reports progress against Private Brands nutrition goals (e.g. salt reduction, sugar reduction, "clean" label). Elevates issues/risks as appropriate.

* Leads the negotiation, development and directs all aspects of third-party nutrition resources (if applicable).

3. Consumer & Industry Knowledge

Builds expertise in functional ingredient and customer trends focusing on renovation

* Identifies product portfolio renovation opportunities through competitor and product analysis.

* Responsible for understanding consumer and industry renovation trends that meet our customer needs within assigned categories.

* Leverages other CoEs within RBS and the local Brands to gain further market and consumer insight.

* Collaborates with Culinary Center Team to gather, analyze and interpret market data and consumer research to identify emerging renovation trends and consumer needs and/or behaviors that provide insights leading to product renovation and differentiation.

* Maintains and grows knowledge of functional ingredients, manufacturer capabilities and competitor products though competitor store visits, Trade Shows, trade and consumer media as well consumer shows/events.

* As the expert, keeps PB Product Owners and categories informed regarding renovation trends.

* Develops and maintains strong internal and external partnerships.

* Stays informed on consumer macro and micro health trends that are impacting the grocery industry.

4. Talent Development & Leadership

Leads a local team of Sensory Techs for Private Brands

* Responsible for the development, talent planning, career guidance, and performance management of Private Brands Sensory Techs.

* Influences organizational alignment within the Private Brands Product Excellence team.

* Private Brands advocate at the Brands and RBS.

* Exudes a high degree of credibility and the ability to work with and through all levels of management (including Category Management leadership).

* Creates a positive work environment and has the ability to inspire and motivate others.

* Delivers intentional and authentic on-going feedback.

* Organizational context: This role is responsible for improving the current Private Brand Portfolio of products through renovation. This role faces challenges such as vendor accountability for responsibly sourced products, acceptance of reformulated products to market, cost of renovation, and complex product formulas. This position involves scientific innovation which is exceptionally difficult to convey and communicate to others outside of the field. This position is responsible for the line management of a PB Nutritionist. This position works collaboratively with PB Product Owners and all PB CoEs.

* Framework & guidelines: Key financial reports/dashboards, Private Brands product development manuals and procedures, new product and packaging specifications, consumer research and insights, industry white papers, annual new product development pipeline/planning, etc.

* Financial dimension: Contributes to product development targeted growth percent and meeting PB sustainability goals. Supporting the PB team to drive PB Sales, profits and consumer satisfaction.

* Degree of latitude: Product formulations and specifications, planning new items and lines to align with Private Brands vision, recommendation of renovation and product improvement.

* Interactions and relationships: Coordinates with others such as PB Product Managers, PB Product Excellence, merchandising and vendors to ensure product is readily available and have buy in on improved products. Provides impactful scientific and sensory information to category teams across all Brands through Category/Portfolio Management.

RequirementsBasic Requirements:

* Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and related work experience

* Food Science, Biochemistry, Food Technology, Culinology, Nutrition

* 5+ years of related experience

* Minimum of two years of management experience
