Position Summary: Primarily responsible for expert-level techniques associated with mechanical defaults and/or issues of Commercial, Residential, Recycling and Roll-Off Trucks to maximize safe and productive operations. This position requires all aspects of a Level B and C Technician. Also, Level A must be able to perform all aspects of repair work including, but not limited to major overhaul of all components (transmission, motors, differentials, compactors and hydraulic systems). This position also requires a willingness and ability to coach other employees on proper company procedures.

Essential Functions:

  • Diagnoses mechanical problems on an expert level.
  • Performs repairs and maintenance on electric, diesel and gasoline trucks including all vehicles to maximize safe and productive operations. Typical repairs include, but are not limited to, routine maintenance and repair of engines, chassis, driveline, body components, hydraulic systems, brake systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, wheels, and tires. All repairs must be completed within standard repair times.
  • Examines and/or makes extensive repairs to gas or diesel engines.
  • Makes adjustments and examines protective guards and specified safety devices on trucks.
  • Reads and interprets VCRs (vehicle condition reports) and/or repair orders, communicates with supervisor and/or driver for clarification of problems and discusses preventive techniques with drivers to minimize future repairs.
  • Completes paperwork associated with repairing vehicles, documenting parts usage, and accounting for applied times (work order times versus time card times).
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a clean, safe work environment in compliance with OSHA and company standards.
  • Performs service/road calls for emergency breakdowns or compactor repairs.

Education, Training, Experience, and Licensing/Certification Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Equivalent of (1) high school diploma or G.E.D. certification and 1 year of related truck or heavy equipment maintenance; OR (2) 4 years of related truck or heavy equipment maintenance.
  • Valid Driver license (CDL a plus).
  • Preferred ASE (Automotive Society of Engineers) Certificate.
  • Preferred Certificate in electronic diagnostics.
  • Preferred Mechanical or trade school certificate.
  • Welding and/or fabrication skills and/or experience.
  • Must pass a 30-60 minute skill evaluation on all mechanical aspects.
  • Must pass employment verification and verification must be kept valid and up to date as applicable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, parts and procedures utilized during repairing and servicing of vehicles and equipment
  • Knowledge of fuel, ignition, electrical, cooling and air brake systems
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems and ability to read hydraulic schematics
  • Skill in operating shop tools and equipment
  • Skill in the repair of special purpose equipment
  • Ability to perform anything from minor to complex mechanical repairs on vehicles and equipment
  • Ability to effectively communicate needed repairs or tasks
  • Ability to read and comprehend service and technical information and MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets).

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • Must be able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, taste, and smell.
  • Capable of bending, stretching, throwing, reaching, lifting, standing for a long time frame throughout the day.
  • Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus.
  • The employee is required to stand and walk on even and uneven surfaces, twist, bend, crouch, climb, crawl, reach, grasp, drag, lift and carry items averaging 70 lbs. (frequently) to a maximum of 150 lbs. (occasionally). Maximum push/pull force is 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in usually loud conditions.

Working conditions:

  • Frequently exposed to loud noise, humidity, all weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, chemicals, fumes, solid waste and airborne particles.
  • Occasionally work in high caution places like on top of containers and loading docks.
  • Must arrive ready to work at the assigned time allocated by management.
  • Working hours are First Shift- 4 am- 2:30 pm and Second Shift- 2 pm- 12:30 am with a half hour lunch.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $16.00 to $30.00 /hour

  • High school or equivalent

  • Hydraulics: 1 year
  • Diesel Mechanic: 2 years
