Position: Diesel Mechanic

Description: Maintains diesel equipment operation by completing inspections; identifying repair and/or replacement needs; performing all mechanical and electrical repairs on vehicles such as major engine repairs on diesel engines, air conditioning repairs, drivability diagnosis and electrical and wiring problems; performs and schedules preventative maintenance; ensures completion of projects in accordance with trade standards; provides information on the proper uses of equipment; report writing; and is required to perform all other duties as required and needed to operate the maintenance department.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Receive direction from shop Manager
  • Diagnoses malfunctions and performs vehicle repairs to maintain school bus fleet and equipment (e.g. power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; completes machine shop operations; making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units etc.).
  • Performs preventative maintenance on school bus fleet for the purpose of ensuring safe transportation. Also performs scheduled maintenance and safety inspections and winterization procedures at prescribed intervals of time and usage or upon malfunction.
  • Disassembles, inspects and replaces worn or broken parts.
  • Fits and adjusts repaired parts.
  • Verifies vehicle performance by conducting Test drives.
  • Performs road calls and on the road repairs as assigned with company vehicle; be on call.
  • Uses hoists, wrenches, gauges and other specialized equipment.
  • Oils and greases vehicles and changes filters.
  • Maintains vehicle records by annotating services and repairs.
  • Maintains part usage records and orders parts.
  • Notifies supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action taken.
  • May be required to maintain small parts storeroom.
  • Maintains fuel in company fleet.
  • Maintains vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.
  • Enhances maintenance department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, productive and efficient work area including ensuring work area is in compliance with all relevant Federal, State and local guidelines and requirements.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned in accordance with all Company and relevant Federal, State and local guidelines and requirements.

 

Required:

  • Must obtain a Class B CDL with Passenger and School Bus endorsements within 30 day
  • Possess a combination of education and technical experience including a minimum of 3-5 years heavy diesel vehicles and equipment service and fleet experience.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Have own basic tools.
  • Electrical and mechanical aptitude.
  • Able to read schematics (both electrical and hydraulic)
  • Perform thorough and accurate inspections
  • Effective problem solving skills and knowledge of heavy duty vehicle components (i.e. diesel engines, hyd. brake systems, steering, suspension, auto transmission, vehicle drivability, etc.).
  • Ability to use good judgment and Decision Making skills.
  • Observe and listen to vehicle in operation to determine malfunction and plan work procedures
  • Must be able to life at least 75 pounds.
  • Must carry a valid Utah commercial driver's license (CDL)
  • Must carry a valid DOT physical exam card.
  • Participate in a pre-employment drug test with a negative result and participate in random drug testing.
  • Provide a DMV and BCI report dated within the time the RST application was submitted and under review.
  • Attend training classes and keep abreast of factory technical bulletins and relevant Federal, State and local guidelines and requirements
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with customers to increase overall customer satisfaction.
  • Capable of communicating effectively and professionally to customers, supervisors, other personnel.
  • Must be willing to be an emergency only back-up school bus driver for contracted Routes.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Bus or fleet maintenance experience a plus.
  • History of working with different forms of heavy equipment (i.e. truck and trailers, excavators, forklifts, compactors, cranes, etc.) a plus.
