Summary:

The Vascular Access Team (VAT) RN is an individual, through didactic and supervised practice, has acquired the skill and knowledge necessary for the practice of peripheral IV, PICC and midline placement, troubleshooting and care. The VAT RN will assess patients for proper vascular access according to evidence based practice and use ultrasound and other technologies for intravenous placement. The VAT RN will assess and treat vascular access device (VAD) sites for all complications and perform appropriate documentation to support procedures. The VAT RN will perform and act as a consultant to other health care team members regarding the placement, maintenance and troubleshooting of all VAD's. The VAT RN will be a resource for staff, patients and their families in the care and maintenance of all vascular access devices. The VAT RN is responsible for the fiscal viability of the vascular access program by entering the charges for the insertion, properly utilizing equipment, using time productively, and thoroughly collecting data. The VAT RN may be cross trained to support other nursing functions.

The VAT RN will work both independently and in conjunction with other members of the patients care team, and will be a steward of UPHDMs FOCUS values.

Responsibilities:

? Activity 33-66% of an 8-hour shift ( 2hr and 38m to 5hr and 17 minutes of a shift)

? Activity 66-100% of an 8-hour shift (5hr and 17minutes to 8 hrs of a shift)

Provides and coordinates nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process.(C)

Consistently utilizes a holistic approach(considering physical, psych/social, spiritual, educational safety and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area.(C)

Provides proper explanation of procedures to patients, their families, and others as needed to insure the patients understanding of the procedure to be performed.(C)

Collaborates with physicians and other professionals in planning and implementing care within

hospital policy and legal limitations..(F)

Practices sterile techniques and prevents cross contamination while assisting Physicians with procedures and treatment that require professional nursing skills.(O)

Assists in the transfer of critically ill patients, cares for emergency room, or ICU patients when staffing allows.(F)

Demonstrates skill in using monitors, infusion pumps, pacemakers, oxygen equipment, and respirators.(F)

Informs and prepares patients and family for special procedures. Does patient teaching.(F)

Cooperates with all personnel in the proper conduct of the Radiology Department. Covers call and rotates shifts to insure proper coverage of Radiology.(F)

Administer medications for pre-op, sedation, or pain relief and monitors patient condition as ordered. Initiates appropriate intervention for contrast reaction, hypotensive episodes, and codes as needed.(F)

Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service.(C)

Performs adult/pediatric urinary catheterization as required.(O)

Demonstrates familiarity with hospital disaster plan and attends hospital fire and safety programs.

Attends Radiology Department Staff meetings and in-service programs.

This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency situation to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the UnityPoint Health Des Moines Hospital Emergency Incident Command System. Situations of a critical nature may require an individual to perform multiple tasks until additional support can be obtained.

EDUCATION:

Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing

Read, write, and speak fluent English

EXPERIENCE:

RN Prefer at least 3 years experience. Critical care experience is preferred.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

Current state RN license

ACLS and BCLS certification

Complete Bard Vascular Access Insertion competency within 6 months
