Flatwater Guides at the U.S. National Whitewater Center (USNWC) are forward-facing employees responsible for the education, safety, and enjoyment of guests participating in paddlesports on the Catawba River. Launching guests throughout the day, conducting sweeps, and occasionally occupying safety positions during Whitewater Race Series events, Flatwater Guides come in contact with a diverse range of people. Flatwater Guides are seasonal employees and report to Flatwater Leads and the Paddlesports Supervisors.

-Follow all safety and operational processes for handling large volumes of guests during flatwater kayak and stand-up paddle (SUP) board trips
-Assist guests at the flatwater put-in loading and unloading 50 pound water crafts (flatwater kayaks and SUP boards) – this is a physically demanding position
-Lead guests on flatwater trips as needed and depending upon varying guest volume
-Ensure that all equipment is kept clean and in excellent working condition completing periodic inspections and adhering to preventative maintenance programs
-Dress according to departmental appearance standards to deliver a professional service to USNWC guests
-Maintain accurate knowledge of activities, products, and services offered by the USNWC
-Maintain availability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required

Requirements

Job Requirements
-Previous experience in customer service and paddling is highly preferred
-Communicates clearly, professionally, and energetically with USWNC staff and guests
-Responsible with a strong work ethic; a dependable and punctual team member
-Outgoing, active, hardworking, and accustomed to working in the elements
-Current First Aid, CPR & AED Certification - courses are offered by the USNWC

Physical Requirements
-Able to lift 50 pounds
-Able to stand for the majority of a work shift (eight hours plus or minus)
-Able to transport flatwater kayaks and stand-up paddle boards over varying terrain
-Ability to rescue distressed guests using a water craft; guests may be several miles away
