3M is seeking a Machinist for the 3M Fabrication Services located in St. Paul, MN. At 3M, you can apply your talent in bold ways that matter. Here, you go.

Job Summary:

The person hired for the position of Machinist will set up and operate a wide variety of make, model and size machine tools; fabricate parts to the required tolerances and specifications; fit, assemble and make operational machines, assemblies, subassemblies and mechanical devices.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

* Knows and applies the operating principles, purpose, proper application and design limitations of machine tools, machine assemblies and mechanical devices; knows the characteristics of metallic and nonmetalic materials used in the fabrication, rebuilding and repair of machines and mechanical devices.

* Reads and works to the indicated accuracy, specifications and tolerances as detailed on engineering drawings, machine assembly prints, machine construction prints, blueprints, sketches, equipment manuals and vendor diagrams. Works with both U.S. customary and SI (metric) systems of measurement.

* Sets up, operates and reads precision testing and measuring instruments to the instrument manufacturer's specification of accuracy. Precision testing and measuring instruments include devices such as calipers, dial indicators, levels, micrometers, profilomerters, rules, scales, sine bars, squares, vernier calipers, ring gages, hole gauges and thread gages.

* Performs mathematical calculations including trigonometry to determine dimensions, locations, angles, sizes, shapes and speeds and feeds.

* Works from both written and verbal instructions.

* Operates material handling equipment.

* Uses powered and non-powered hand tools such as broaches, dies, drifts, drill motors, files, grinders, hammers, punches, reamers, saws, scrapers, scribers, torque wrenches, and similar hand tools.

* Uses machine tool accessories such as angle plates, arbors, boring heads, centers, chucks, clamps, digital readouts, dividing heads, hold-downs, parallels, rotary tables, steady rests, tail stocks, V-blocks, vise, and similar machine tool accessories.

* Selects, sharpens, forms or makes and uses cutting tools such as carbide inserts, counterborers, countersinks, drills, and mills, form cutters, grinding wheels, keyway cutters, reamers, shell mills, and mills, tape, tool bits, and similar cutting tools.

* Sets up and operates a wide variety of make, model and size machine tools such as boring bars, drills, grinders, jig bores, key seaters, lathes, milling machines, NC/CNC/MDI machines, presses, saws, and similar machine tools.

* Fabricates parts using a wide variety of metallic and nonmetallic materials.

* Disassembles, assembles, aligns and levels machines and equipment to the required tolerances and specifications.

* Mounts, adjusts, sets clearance, aligns, trams, fits and lubricates mechanical devices such as clutches, brakes, bearings, gear drives, linkages, rolls and shafts to operate to the required tolerances and specifications.

* Provides and maintains the quality and quantity of personal tools for use on the job as required by the 3M.

* Keeps work area neat and orderly, contribute efforts toward the overall cleanliness and safety of the shop and clean up the general working area. Machine tools are to be cleaned and other tools returned to the tool crib or shop storage cabinets as appropriate. Broken or malfunctioning tools are to be brought to the attention of the shop supervisor or designated tool crib personnel.

* Knows and use safes work methods when performing the job requirements so as to avoid personal injury, injury to co-workers or damage to 3M property.

* Reports unsafe work conditions or equipment operations to Supervisor immediately.

* Knows and applies the principles of welding and welding processes.

* Completes required paperwork and uses manual or electronic reporting equipment following established procedures. This includes daily Work Records, Stock Withdrawal Forms and other forms and records that may be required in the performance of the job or operations of the department.

* Performs job requirements within the specified or shortest time possible and at the lowest cost and with minimum waste.

* Submits work method improvement suggestions, craft training suggestions and other cost recommendations to shop supervisor.

* Attends 3M authorized seminars, instructional sessions and vocational school classes to maintain personal competence in new areas of technology, components, tools, methods and practices.

* Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as required.

This position will require:

* Weekend work

* Working overtime

* Working second shift 2:00 PM -- 10:30 PM

This position may require:

* Short notice shift coverage

* Frequent Physical demands, including:

* Prolonged standing

* Bending, twisting, stooping

* Gripping and grasping

* Lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds

* Repetitive motion of arms and hands

* Operate or work near moving machinery

* Operate powered industrial vehicles -- eg. Forklifts

Basic Qualifications:

* Possess a High School Diploma/GED or higher

* Possess a two (2) year technical degree, certificate or diploma OR a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a machinist position

Preferred Qualifications:

* Minimum five (5) years of experience in a machinist position

Location: St. Paul, MN

Relocation: Is not authorized

Qualified applicants will be required to take and pass 3M employment testing as a part of the selection process.

Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status)
