About this job

Assist in providing laboratory services at the Regional Lab in Support Services.

Essential Functions:

* Performs Client Service Functions to include, processing telephone calls into RLR, responding to inquiries about testing and specimen requirements and reporting on variations in specimen quality.

* Manages the Fax Mail process to include documentation, pending log management, and timely communication to all regulatory agencies regarding reportable diseases.

* Manages the communication of critical values from the Regional Lab to the ordering labs to include the documentation of the call in the systems

* Follows established procedures for processing of patient samples. Determines the acceptability of specimens and acts on that information.

* Greets visitors in a prompt and courteous manner. Directs visitors to other service areas within the facility.

* Performs the following specimen accessioning: Anatomic Pathology using the COPATH AP Information System. Works in conjunction with the Histology staff to optimize specimen accessioning. Waived testing of Fecal Occult Blood (FOBT) specimens using the Polymedco OC-80 analyzer. Works under the supervision of department supervisors, technologists and technicians.

* Follows instrument and equipment maintenance and troubleshooting procedures. Maintains records of actions. Attempts to troubleshoot malfunctioning instruments or equipment, referring major problems to the supervisor or designee.

* Enters and retrieves information using the laboratory computer system when required and determines the feasibility of add on requests.

* Communicates with medical, clinical and technical staff at other laboratories concerning specimen inquiries, problems, critical values and investigations.

* Performs duties in compliance with laboratory safety and infection control practices. Wears protective equipment as required. Disposes of bioharzardous waste according to company policies.

* Assists material handlers to maintain adequate inventory of clerical and laboratory supplies. Maintains a clean and orderly work area.

* Maintains confidentiality of patient information. Presents a professional appearance and manner to all patients and co-workers.

* Accesses and set-up of Microbiology specimen.

* Performs other related duties as directed.

Basic Qualifications:

Experience

* One (1) year of full time experience working in a clinical environment which includes laboratory testing and specimen processing required.

Education

* Graduation from a medical assistant program; or equivalent training program; or completion of a minimum of 20 Credit Hours of Life Science classes at accredited university or college (life science classes in microbiology, biology, chemistry, physiology, organic chemistry, cell biology, genetics, or related field) required.

* High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration

* Certificate of proper completion of a Medical Assistant Program or documentation of Life Science course credits required.

Additional Requirements:

* Knowledge of medical terminology and routine laboratory collection and testing procedures required.

* Knowledge and understanding of infection control and aseptic technique required.

* Effective interpersonal and communication skills required.

* Demonstrates skills in organizing and prioritizing required.

* Proficiency in the use of applicable computer software.

* Greets visitors, manages in-coming and out-going telephone calls, processes lab orders, provides patient specimen collection instructions.

* Performs the responsibilities of specimen processing to maintain efficient laboratory operations.

* Monitors specimen collection accuracy and executes corrective action and documentation when specimens are compromised.

* Maintains lab equipment and document actions according to protocol.

* Maintains a clean and well organized work area with adequate supplies

* Assists supervisor with the orientation and training of new employees.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Phlebotomy certification from an accrediting agency preferred.
