Position Summary

The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) provides ambulatory primary health care services to both individuals and families from a Mobile Unit, which includes the management of health problems and the delivery of preventive health care services. The Family Nurse Practitioner has a clear understanding of scope of his/her nursing practice and his/her role as part of the health care team. The FNP may on occasion, oversee student nurse practitioners, new or volunteer nurse practitioners, and medical students. The Family Nurse Practitioner follows policies and procedures developed by Care Alliance and serves on organizational committees as requested.

Requirements

The FNP makes clinical judgments based on assessment of the patient's physical, psychological, spiritual, social, educational and environmental needs and on evidence-based nursing and medical knowledge. For acute health care problems, the FNP establishes medical diagnoses and develops a treatment plan. In addition, the FNP conducts and orders health screening exams to help prevent the onset of illness or disease and to help identify disease in early stages. The FNP provides patient education about the management of health care problems and promotes healthy life-style choices. The FNP collaborates with other health professionals from other disciples to provide comprehensive health care services. The FNP evaluates the patient's response to the therapeutic regimen, makes necessary revisions and consults with other professionals as needed. The FNP prescribes medications according to the formulary established in the State of Ohio. The Family Nurse Practitioner performs minor diagnostic and surgical procedures within scope of practice and his/her training. The FNP establishes a Standard Care Arrangement with collaborating physicians and follows the provisions of the agreement.

Education and Experience Required

The FNP must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and he/she must hold current licensure in the State of Ohio as a Registered Nurse and hold a Certificate of Authority. The FNP must be a graduate of a formal Family Nurse Practitioner program at an accredited college or university with a Master's of Science in Nursing preferred. Board certification as Family Nurse Practitioner from ANCC or other certifying body is required. Two years of experience as a Family Nurse Practitioner is preferred. Current Certificate to Prescribe in the State of Ohio is required. The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development through independent reading, study and participation in continuing education programs. Fluency in English with an ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.
