Job Summary:

Performs laboratory procedures using established and approved protocols, which may require the broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. Responsible for operating equipment such as laboratory computer system, hematology analyzer, chemistry analyzer and coagulation analyzer.

Essential Duties:

* Performs complex laboratory procedures; recognizes and documents deviation from expected results; and analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles. Ensures accurate and appropriate completion of tests including the processing of outside lab tests.

* Troubleshoots malfunction of laboratory equipment. Orders necessary parts and is responsible for repair or for notifying service personnel and departments effected by testing delays.

* Resolves technical problems and ensures that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications. Ensures patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly or results are received from alternate instrumentation.

* Evaluates results for abnormalities and inconsistencies by following predetermined protocols and takes necessary action to alert appropriate personnel.

* Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.

* Verifies proper specimen, test and patient identification and proactively takes action to correct errors.

* Ensures lab results are reported timely and accurately. Communicates results to necessary laboratory personnel and/or clients via verbal, written, or computer link communication in a prompt, professional and courteous manner. Answers questions regarding test results and methodologies.

* Participates in proficiency testing according to Laboratory protocol. Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST

Education:

* Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution is required.

* One to two years of laboratory training or experience or both, in high complexity testing involving at least six (6) months in the subspecialties pertinent to the scope of the laboratory testing is also required.

Licensure/Certification:

* ASCP certification is preferred.

* Because all Medical Technologists at Nebraska Heart Hospital may at times be scheduled to work alone, a Medical Technologist is required to qualify as a CLIA General Supervisor according to the following CLIA guidelines:

* Qualifications for Technical Supervisor, General Supervisor, and Testing Personnel required under 493.1449, 493.1461 and 493.1489 CLIA Guidelines as below:

Technical Supervisor qualifications may be fulfilled according to 493.1449 of CLIA standards:

* Be a doctor of medicine or osteopathy licensed to practice medicine or osteopathy in the State, and be certified in anatomic or clinical pathology or both, by the American Board of Pathology or the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology or possess qualifications that are equivalent to those required for certification.

Or

* Have earned a doctorate or master's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution and have at least 2 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing involving at least six months in the subspecialties pertinent to the scope of the laboratory testing.

Or

* Have earned a bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution and have at least 4 years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing involving at least six months in the subspecialties pertinent to the scope of the laboratory testing.

* General Supervisor qualifications may be fulfilled by the Laboratory Director, Technical Supervisor and/or an individual according to 493.1461 of CLIA standards:

* Qualify as a Laboratory Director under 493.1443 or Technical Supervisor under 493.1449.

Or

* Have earned a doctorate, master's or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution and have at least 1 year of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing.

Or

c. Have earned an associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution and have at least two years of laboratory training or experience or both in high complexity testing.

Experience/Pre-Requisites:

* The skills required for proper specimen collection, including patient preparation, if applicable, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation and storage of specimens.

* Knowledge of and skills required for implementing hospital and laboratory procedures and practices and standards.

* Knowledge of lab equipment and testing to implement and monitor the quality control policies and procedures of the laboratory.

* The skills required for performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration procedures related to each test performed.

* A working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.

* Knowledge of basic mathematical functions.

* Skill in performing a full range of lab tests, phlebotomy, and have knowledge of medical skills and terminology required as a laboratory professional.

* The awareness of the factors that influence test results. The skills required to assess and verify the validity of patient test results through the evaluation of quality control sample values prior to reporting patient test results.

* Skill in documenting and maintaining digital records and reports.

* Ability to set priorities and act upon those priorities to meet deadlines required.

* Ability to plan and develop new processes and practices required.

* Ability to react to emergent situations with professionalism, calmness, and effectiveness.

* Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with individuals of all ages..

* Ability to recognize problems, recommend solutions and act appropriately in all situations.

* Ability to care for and communicate with patients, families and team members in a manner which promotes dignity and respect.

* Ability to speak, read, understand and follow oral and written instruction in English.

* Ability to perform computer tasks at a user's level and to have a general knowledge of office practices and procedures.

MEDICAL LAB TECHNICIAN

Education:

* Must have graduated from a medical laboratory or clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), the Commission on Allied Health Education Accreditation (CAHEA), or other organization approved by HHS OR

* Be a high school graduate or equivalent and have successfully completed an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).

* One to two years of laboratory training or experience; or both, in high complexity testing involving at least six (6) months in the subspecialties pertinent to the scope of the laboratory testing is also required.

Licensure/Certification:

* ACSP certification is preferred.
