Job Summary/Essential Duties:

* Functions within the scope of practice of a Paramedic as defined within state regulations.

* Provides patient care and performs patient care procedures, including wound cleansing and dressing, immobilization, medical administration under medical direction, IV insertions, and re-assessment of patient condition and status.

* Provides any and all ACLS interventions including but not limited to endotracheal intubation and cardiac defibrillation.

* Performs role of Circulating Nurse/Paramedic during Trauma Alerts.

* Responds to Code Blue in the ED and, when requested, on the hospital campus.

* Provides patient transportation within the Emergency Department and on the hospital campus as requested.

* Assists in providing patient care in other areas of the hospital but not as a Paramedic.

* Completes medical record to indicate treatments, procedures, and medications administered or performed. Authorized to make entries in the medical record, consistent with and limited to the scope of the job duties and any applicable licensure.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience

* 2 years previous experience as a Paramedic preferred.

* Previous clinical experience in an Emergency Department or hospital setting is desirable

Additional requirements include:

BLS or BLS instructor certification is required upon hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Red Cross: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, American Safety and Health Institute: CPR, PRO, must say "Professional Level-with AED", and American Heart Association: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.

ACLS or ACLS instructor certification is required within 6 months. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Heart Association: Advanced Cardiac Life Support, American Safety and Health Institute: ACLS, American College of Surgeons: ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) and American College of Emergency Physician: ACLS

PALS (Pediatric Cardiac Life Support) or PALS instructor certification required within 6 months. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Heart Association: Pediatric Advanced Life Support, American Safety and Health Institute: PALS, Emergency Nurses Association: Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC), American Academy of Pediatrics: Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP), and American Academy of Pediatrics/American College of Emergency Physicians: APLS.

PHTLS: Prehospital trauma life support within 6 months of hire.

Education/Licensure

* Must have a valid certificate to function as a EMT-P (EMT-Paramedic) or EMT-I (EMT-Intermediate) in the state of Iowa.
