GENERAL SUMMARY:

Performs tests and procedures in assigned sections,including those which require exercise of independent judgment and responsibilitywith minimum supervision. Independentlyperforms qualitative and quantitative tests, following established guidelinesand predetermined criteria. Identifiesproblems that may adversely affect test performance and/or results and usesknowledge, critical thinking skills, and judgment to troubleshoot and resolvethem. May be assigned to assume theduties of a charge technologist.

ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS:

* Performs complex laboratory procedures utilizedfor the diagnosis and treatment of disease as appropriate for patient age toinclude neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric adults;recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problemsusing scientific principles.

* Analyzes quality control data, makes judgmentsconcerning the results, and takes appropriate action to maintain test accuracyand precision.

* Assists and supports quality management systemsand performance improvement initiatives. Utilizes LEAN principles/productivitystandards.

* Performs preventive maintenance and basictroubleshooting of instrumentation and equipment.

* Works independently, organizing work to meetestablished deadlines and records.

* Performs new instrument or procedureimplementation and training.

* Maintains supply inventories.

* Trains new employees and acts as a preceptor formedical laboratory science students.

* Operates laboratory information systems,personal computers, and instrument-related computer software.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

* Serves on hospital and laboratory committees as requestedby supervisor/manager.

* Performssupervisory functions as delegated by supervisor/manager.

* Acts as technical resource for the client services andspecimen processing areas.

* Provides assistance to other laboratory teammembers.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

* Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or in Chemistry, Biology or related field.

* One-year clinical internship in a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited clinical laboratory science program or approved alternate career path that meets certification eligibility requirements.

* Certification in one of the following:

o Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT)by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)

o Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)

o Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Assoication of Bioanalysts (AAB).

* A person may be hired into this position if he/she has completed the educational requirements and is eligible for the certification exam. The exam must be successfully completed within six (6) months of hire.
