GENERAL SUMMARY:

Performs highly complex clinicallaboratory tests in histocompatibility and flow cytometry that requires a professionallevel of knowledge to analyze and interpret results. Performs testing for both living and deceaseddonor transplantation including human leukocyte antigen (HLA) testing, antibodyscreening, and flow cytometric crossmatches. Requires ability to work independently, use of critical thinking, andstrong communication skills to ensure vital patient information is accuratelyshared between transplant teams. Usesflow cytometry skills to perform antigenic testing on blood, tissue, and bodyfluids for diagnosis of disease.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Performs immunological work-ups within therequired time of current organ preservation methods.

* Independently verifies results and reportsconclusions directly to physicians.

* Performs crossmatches between recipients anddonors (live or deceased) identified by the United Network for Organ Sharing(UNOS) and the Iowa Donor Network. Responsible for extent of crossmatching and selection of appropriatesera.

* Screens potential recipients for anti-HLAantibody determination.

* Records and reviews test results foraccuracy. Completes requiredadministrative tasks and gives reports to medical director for review.

* Performs flow cytometry analysis forlymphoma/leukemia immunotyping and lymphyocyte subsets/CD4s among other tests.

* Participates in competency assessments andproficiency testing.

* Performs complex laboratory procedures utilizedfor the diagnosis and treatment of disease as appropriate for patient age toinclude neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric adults;recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problemsusing scientific principles.

* Rotates into call schedules as determined bydepartment.

* Analyzes quality control data, makes judgmentsconcerning the results, and takes appropriate action to maintain test accuracyand precision.

* Assists and supports quality management systemsand performance improvement initiatives. Utilizes LEAN principles/productivitystandards.

* Performs preventive maintenance and basictroubleshooting of instrumentation and equipment.

* Works independently, organizing work to meetestablished deadlines and records.

* Performs new instrument or procedureimplementation and training.

* Maintains supply inventories.

* Trains new employees and acts as a preceptor formedical laboratory science students.

* Operates laboratory information systems,personal computers, and instrument-related computer software.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

* Performs limited testing outside ofhistocompatibility/flow cytometry to meet the needs of the laboratory.

* Serves on hospital and laboratory committees as requestedby supervisor/manager.

* Performssupervisory functions as delegated by supervisor/manager.

* Acts as technical resource for the client services andspecimen processing areas.

* Provides assistance to other laboratory teammembers.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

* Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or inChemistry, Biology or related field with one-year clinical internship in aNational Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science accredited ClinicalLaboratory Science program or approved alternate career path asdesignated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988.

* Registration by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists(ASCP) or by the American Medical Technologists as a Medical Technologistor categorical registration by either the National Credentialing Agencyfor Laboratory Personnel or ASCP in one of the laboratory sciences is required.

* Minimum of 1 year full time experience in an AmericanSociety for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) or College of AmericanPathologists (CAP) accredited histocompatibility laboratory.

OR

CertifiedHistocompatibility Technologist (CHT) or Certified HistocompatibilitySpecialist (CHS) from the American Board of Histocompatibility andImmunogenetics (ABHI).
