About this job

Be the leader in planning for and the production of a variety of upscale bakery offerings for retail outlets and catering operations at the direction of Executive Chef. Perform menu planning, food ordering, food preparation, work scheduling, supervision of staff, hiring and training of employees. Prepare menu selections which require special baking and presentation skills. Test new menu items routinely. Assist in new and innovative retail and catering offerings in the menu and the development of such. Maintain service and quality product standards on a consistent basis. Responsible for oversight and completion of customer orders and food preparation. Assure standards of cleanliness daily. Maintain effective communication with customers, employees and supervisors. Provide functional supervision to staff and work towards meeting stated objectives.

Required:

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Three years of lead bakery experience.

  • Ability to perform all duties of lower level food service workers. 

  • Stable work or education history with good attendance record.

  • Interpersonal competencies in communication, teaching others through coaching and other means, cultural diversity, and teamwork.

  • Additional competencies may include dependability/accountability, multi-tasking, flexibility, initiative and planning/organizing. Ability to delegate authority and responsibility.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor and co-workers, perform basic math functions, lift and move up to 40 pounds, climb ladders and stand, walk, reach and stoop extensively.  

  • Knowledge of sanitation.

  • Ability to meet daily deadlines.  

  • Computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, processing orders and e-mail.

  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from different viewpoints and backgrounds.

Preferred:

  • Degree from either an accredited culinary school that specializes in bakery and pastry or a vocational degree in baking and pastry.
  • Experience in a high volume, fast paced environment.

  • The position requires the ability to work early mornings and weekends based on the business need for Purdue Dining and Catering.

  • A Background Check is required for employment in this position.
